Rushed and Weird

The storyline was good, and the female narrator was great. The male narrator’s voice didn’t fit well at all for any character came across weird and stilted. The timeline of the story also felt rushed.

Perfect, with one exception.

I loved the book, but if the main character is a person of color, the narrator should be as well. But for the references to her ethnicity, I wouldn’t have known or remembered because her voice was clearly not a person of color. It was a bit frustrating.

The description of this book says it’s a science fiction story of a 13 year old genius. Nothing about the description or the cover warns that it’s inappropriate for young listeners. However, less than 10 minutes in, the 13 year old starts dropping compound curse words. Not cool-AT ALL!

Didn’t even make it an hour in...

The premise of the story was interesting, but I couldn’t get into because of the WTF moments. Every character of color was described by their race, but none of the others were. There was the “older Black woman” who, of course, had been with her family for a long time, used more slang than the non-Black characters and knew voodoo. Then there was the “big Black man” who was, of course, less than intelligent and was notable primarily for his brute physical characteristics. I won’t even get into the inaccurate cultural references. Stereotypical and lazy writing. I’ll pass...even for free.

On, and on, and on...

I liked the premise of this story, but 2.5 hours in, she’s still restating the SAME THING over and over, and still not willing to say what she needs to say. Her entire (self-proclaimed) problem is lying, but when she finally decides to fix it, she still does the opposite and keeps lying. This is the point at which I returned the book.

Whisky tango foxtrot

Whisky tango foxtrot kind of sick, twisted "ain't no way you're gonna turn this into a romance" mess is this?? He's evil and there is literally not once ounce of true consent in the midst of the rape, violence and slavery that is the premise of this story. I want my $2.13 back.

Good story, bad male narrator

I enjoyed the story, and found myself liking Brody much more than I thought I would. I felt like part of the story dragged on a little beyond the point of irritation, but otherwise it was well written and a good listen. My only real complaint is regarding the male narrator. His female voice is horrible in every book I've heard, and the male voice isn't much better. I kept wishing the female narrator had just done the entire book. Her male voice was better than his and fit the character so much better.

Slightly disappointed

I love the Westmoreland series, and was excited to get these two stories in a bundle. However, they did not hold my attention nearly as well as prior stories in the series. They were just ok. I appreciate the lack of unnecessary drama, but the romances here were cookie cutter and weak with little excitement. Honestly, I was glad when they were over. Also, the narrator's accents in Ian's book were too much, and her tone didn't match the context of the scene quite often in both stories.

I've read and enjoyed other books from Brenda Jackson, but I could not finish this one and returned it. It fell extremely flat. There were inconsistencies in the story, the execution of the plot was weak from almost the beginning. The narration left a lot to be desired too.

The narration was horrible, with no sense of context, tone or inflection. I think the story was much better than it came across, although the cliff hanger made me want a refund on this free book.
