Historia
After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she describes how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset.

I wanted to love this book, however...
Revisado: 08-18-21
The concept of this book is important and valuable for those looking to live a better life. The book itself, unfortunately, leaves much to be desired. For instance, many of the stories and the examples cited are dated. Most harken from the '80s through the early 2000s. The narrative is in desperate need of an update. Second, the power of the growth mindset concept springs partly from its simplicity. Alas, the concept's simplicity makes it less than ideal as the subject for an entire book. Examples and stories make the same points repeatedly on an endless loop. Finally, I fear the author takes a fixed mindset approach to how the the growth mindset applies in life. By her telling, busiensses, relationships and careers all fail or flourish due to fixed or growth mindsets. Superficial analysis of complex subjects lessens the power of her message, In sum, Dr. Dweck's life's work represents an important contribution to our understanding of how to live a better life. However, the book itself is overkill. An in-depth article or two on the subject would do nicely.

Virtuoso performance
Revisado: 03-10-21
While this is not my favorite Austen work of all time, anything by her is worth the listen, if only for the beauty of her prose and observations on human nature. Stevenson does a masterful job of bringing the characters to life and her reading of the story added exceedingly to my enjoyment of the experience.

Historia
Emma, originally published in 1815 and deemed Jane Austen's best novel, is a witty satire of English society set within the customary plot: young ladies finding proper husbands. It can be heard as a charming love story, a detective story, and a comically lively picture of English life 200 years ago. Prunella Scales' delightful reading reveals Austen's mastery of dialogue and character.

A brilliant performance worthy of the work itself
Revisado: 02-17-21
Jane Austen‘s skill and cleverness are matched by the wit and performance of the narrator. A thoroughly enjoyable listening experience I did not want to end.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Excellent overall with the caveat
Revisado: 07-19-20
The structure and storyline of this book are superb. I thoroughly enjoyed it with one caveat. Although the narrator overall was very good, he has a maddening habit of swallowing words at the end of his sentences at times. This should not happen with a book and recording of this quality, and, while it is not a fatal flaw, I found it annoying.

Historia
We view the long, horrifying struggle from the vantage of the White House as Lincoln copes with incompetent generals, hostile congressmen, and his raucous cabinet. He overcomes these obstacles by winning the respect of his former competitors, and in the case of Seward, finds a loyal and crucial friend to see him through. This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.

Not her best
Revisado: 03-08-06
Was a little disappointed with this work. Would have preferred an unabridged version. Came across more as a recitation of facts without her usual storytelling flare. Not bad, not her best.

Poor narration
Revisado: 02-01-03
Content of the book is fine. The narration is poorly done -- somewhat monotone, bland, with a decidely soporific effect. Would much prefer a trained actor. Decided to abort listening after getting an hour or two into the book.
