Michele Harper is a female African-American emergency room physician in a profession that is overwhelmingly male and white. Brought up in Washington, DC, in a complicated family, she went to Harvard, where she met her husband. They stayed together through medical school until two months before she was scheduled to join the staff of a hospital in central Philadelphia, when he told her he couldn't move with her. Her marriage at an end, Harper began her new life in a new city, in a new job, as a newly single woman.

Wonderful
Revisado: 10-05-23
Dr. Harper is one of the few doctors I know who is fully committed to holistic healing. She has amazing compassion and not once did she mention being motivated by money. Sadly, I fear there aren’t many like her left in the field of medicine. I also found her to be a personal inspiration for self love and healing. Thank you Dr. Harper.

Historia
One morning in late 2017, New York Times columnist Frank Bruni woke up with strangely blurred vision. He wondered at first if some goo or gunk had worked its way into his right eye. But this was no fleeting annoyance, no fixable inconvenience.

Very Inspiring Except for the Political Rhetoric
Revisado: 10-21-22
I really enjoyed this book but had to stop listening in the last half hour or so because the author spent a good deal of time promoting Democrats and President Biden. He tried to say that he originally thought Biden was a pathetic choice for the party's presidential nomination but then turned out to be awesome. Give me a break. I can take some reference to political views, but this was over the top.
It's a shame that he ruined a truly inspiring book with that drivel. Just because he wrote about travel, cooking and movies for the NY Times doesn't mean he has to promote their political views. Save it for a book about politics.

Historia
In 1916, Sven Ormson leaves a restless life in Stockholm to seek adventure in Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago where darkness reigns four months of the year and he might witness the splendor of the Northern Lights one night and be attacked by a polar bear the next. But his time as a miner ends when an avalanche nearly kills him, leaving him disfigured, and Sven flees even further, to an uninhabited fjord. There, with the company of a loyal dog, he builds a hut and lives alone, testing himself against the elements.

When I started this book, I was doubtful that it would hold my attention. But as I continued to listen, I was completely drawn in to the mind of this man and his life in the Arctic. It is fascinating.

Historia
How did she turn a side hustle into a game-changing business, and at the same time, achieve happiness and fulfillment in her life? For Charlotte, it all came down to one thing - jeong. One of the most important Korean cultural concepts, jeong is a deep and meaningful connection that can be felt between people, places, and things. It goes deeper than love and friendship, and grows stronger with time. In South Korea, jeong encourages generosity, empathy, and the cultivation of lasting bonds.

Really enjoyed this one
Revisado: 08-23-21
I love learning about other cultures and have been a fan of Sokoglam skincare for a few years now. I found this book to be both interesting and uplifting. It is especially enjoyable because it is read by the author, Charlotte Cho, who I really admire. I don’t always like her politics, but she and her husband have created an amazing company that is clearly full of heart!

Historia
On a humid afternoon in 1933, American Jessie Lesage steps off a boat from Paris and onto the shores of Vietnam. Accompanying her French husband Victor, an heir to the Michelin rubber fortune, she’s certain that their new life is full of promise, for while the rest of the world is sinking into economic depression, Indochine is gold for the Michelins. Jessie knows that the vast plantations near Saigon are the key to the family’s prosperity, and though they have recently been marred in scandal, she needs them to succeed for her husband’s sake.

Amazing book
Revisado: 06-04-21
This book is excellent - excellent story, excellent character development and excellent narration. Having recently visited Vietnam and the “Hanoi Hilton” museum, it was especially interesting to me to read about French colonization there. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like historical fiction.

Historia
Bhima, the unforgettable main character of Thrity Umrigar’s beloved national best seller, The Space Between Us, returns in this triumphant sequel - a poignant and compelling novel in which the former servant struggles against the circumstances of class and misfortune to forge a new path for herself and her granddaughter in modern India. Poor and illiterate, Bhima had faithfully worked for the Dubash family, an upper-middle-class Parsi household, for more than 20 years.

One of the bests books I have ever listened to
Revisado: 07-30-20
I don't know where to begin. The story was so beautiful. It demonstrates culture, cultural change, different kinds of love and relationships, and abject poverty contrasted with wealth. The character development was outstanding. I loved every one of them, but especially Parvati. The narrator did an awesome job. I can't say enough good things. I immediately ordered another book by Thrity Umrigar - I hope it is just as good, but that will be a high standard. Read it!

Historia
North Korea is like no other tyranny on Earth. Its citizens are told their home is the greatest nation in the world, and Big Brother is always watching. It is Orwell's 1984 made reality. Huge factories with no staff or electricity, hospitals with no patients, uniformed child soldiers, and the world-famous and eerily empty DMZ - the Demilitarized Zone, where North Korea ends and South Korea begins - are all framed by a relentless flow of regime propaganda from omnipresent loudspeakers. Free speech is an illusion: one word out of line, and the gulag awaits.

Enlightening and entertaining
Revisado: 06-05-18
John Sweeney ‘s book offers interesting insight into the “hermit kingdom” of North Korea. He does this mostly by telling the story of his tour inside the country. He also has a great sense of humor and while he treats the human rights issues quite seriously, he also pokes fun at much of the propaganda and absurdity. He is an excellent story teller. I really enjoyed it. The narrator was great too.
