Simple but yet random
Revisado: 09-30-24
Great story if you are bored and driving in circles on a tractor. It wasn’t the supernatural aspects that required suspension of belief, it was that the main character was such an idiot.
Until he suddenly was clever and heroic.
I liked the ending so I didn’t ask for a refund.

When a mysterious American offers Charlie 20,000 euros to steal two small monkey figurines to match the one he already has, Charlie is suspicious; the job seems too good to be true, and of course, it is. He soon finds the American beaten nearly to death, while the third figurine has disappeared.

Interesting characters and a good plot twist. My only complaint was that too many things had to be explained at the end.

Historia
The year started badly and only got worse - blizzards, strikes, power cuts, and political unrest were the norm. For journalist Allie Burns, however, someone else's bad news was the unmistakable sound of opportunity knocking, and the year is ripe with possibilities. But Allie is a woman in a man's world. Desperate to get away from the "women's stories" the Glasgow desk keeps assigning her, she strikes up an alliance with wannabe investigative journalist Danny Sullivan. From the start, their stories create enemies.

I almost returned this book
Revisado: 06-09-22
I felt it started slow. I didn’t like Danny at the beginning.
The story brought up interesting perspectives on what is betrayal and entrapment. Especially relevant in the 21st century.
A view of 1970’s politics was also interesting.
I was pretty well engaged in the book by the 3/4 mark.
A few character developments were well telegraphed in advance but that was fine.
I would recommend the book.

Your shithead next door neighbor who revs his engine at all hours of the night? Now imagine, for a moment, that pain in the ass follows you to your new home on a Caribbean island and continues to poke and poke and poke until you fucking explode. You'd wanna retaliate, right?

Should be called Dumbass on the Job
Revisado: 09-10-20
I usually don’t come to hate the main character of a story but Danny Dumbass is just an obnoxious idiot.
The plot is obvious, the subplots are obvious, the romance obvious, the characters are shallow.
This is a book written for preteens with a few f-bombs to limit the audience.
For a while I thought it was satire. The guy’s name is drunk and he is a security guy on an island and there is a romance and there is a big misunderstanding.
It could have worked.
But it didn’t.

Historia
Helena Pearson. Undeniably beautiful... indisputably rich... incredibly wanton... the perfect client for Travis McGee. He did a big favor for her husband and then for the lady herself. Now Helena is dead, and McGee finds out that she had one last request to make of him: find out why her beautiful daughter, Maurie, keeps trying to kill herself. So, half-convinced that Maurie needs a good doctor and not a devil-may-care beach bum, McGee makes his way to the prosperous town of Fort Courtney, Florida, a respectable, booming, deadly little place.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

This was an interesting story of what makes a person the way they are. it was a reverent exploration of a young person thrown into WW2 and how it shaped his Son's life. much better than the usual free monthly stories. I'd actually pay money to hear it.

Clever plot twists
Revisado: 06-12-19
I listened to this book while driving tractor all day. If the book is boring or the narration is annoying I find a different book.
I actually listened to this one twice.
I enjoy the following plot line and trying to figure out what will happen next.
John D. MacDonald doesn't disappoint. The main character is a guy I can identify with. I like his girlfriend.
I don't mind the corny dialogue.
i like to spend the day in 1950's Florida with a beach and a drink and a solvable crisis rather than being in 2019 driving in circle in 95 degree Oregon heat and pulling a mower.
