Masterful writing but I wasn't riveted
Revisado: 08-01-13
Any additional comments?
I loved the narration, the writing style and the depth of character development (namely that of Cormoran Strike). However, I wasn't riveted by the story for some reason. I feel as if I missed something that everyone else seems to have experienced. For me, the middle was long and drawn out. Overall, I enjoyed it but did not find it to be a real page turner.

Historia
Rose Baker seals men’s fates. With a few strokes of the keys that sit before her, she can send a person away for life in prison. A typist in a New York City Police Department precinct, Rose is like a high priestess. Confessions are her job. It is 1923, and while she may hear every detail about shootings, knifings, and murders, as soon as she leaves the interrogation room she is once again the weaker sex, best suited for filing and making coffee. This is a new era for women, and New York is a confusing place for Rose. Gone are the Victorian standards of what is acceptable. All around her women bob their hair, they smoke, they go to speakeasies.

I love the time period and setting in this book. I am also a fan of Gretchen Mol from Boardwalk Empire. She did an excellent job narrating. This story has a great "twist" at the end! Definitely enjoyed it!

Loved it!!
Revisado: 07-20-13
Any additional comments?
I typically do not read books in the horror genre or SK for that matter, but after reading great reviews, I took a chance on Joyland. I absolutely loved it! It is not a gory horror book, rather a suspenseful well told tale. So glad I listened and I will probably revisit this book in the future.

Quote from the book:
"Some people called it the Tree of Heaven. No matter where its seed fell, it made a tree which struggled to reach the sky. It grew in boarded-up lots and out of neglected rubbish heaps and it was the only tree that grew out of cement".
I have loved this book for years. I love the themes, the similes and symbolism used in the book and I have read it many times.
For some reason this narrator just did not impress me. She did a good job but maybe this is one book that I just prefer reading instead of listening. I will probably listen to this again in the future to see if I still feel the same. That being said, I still recommend this excellently written book.

Historia
>When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

I never listened to Simon Vance before but his performance in this already exceptional book was superb.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Many moments moved me to both joy and sadness.

I listened to this book in 2 days and will definitely listen to more of Lawrence Anthony's books if made available on Audible.

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Realistically flawed characters
Revisado: 05-01-13
Any additional comments?
This is a great book with characters that struggle with fears & addictions that at times get the best of them. I only wish that greater time had been spent on Arthur Opp rather than Kel Keller because he was a more deeply intriguing character to me. I also agree with another Audible reviewer that the narrator for the character Kel sounded too old and somewhat one dimensional. The narrator for Arthur was fantastic. I am very glad I listened to this book. It is definitely worth a credit.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

I loved this book. The writing is excellent with incredibly developed characters. The story is compelling (and truly heartbreaking at times). The narration is absolutely perfect and brings the characters to life so that you are immediately drawn to them or repulsed by them (such as in the case of Hilly Holbrook and the other white women employers). Hooray for the bravery of Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter ( and all the "Help") for writing their stories exposing the themes of racism and hypocrisies prevalent in the 1960's. Although these were fictional characters, surely fearless women such as these really lived and helped break the barriers of segregation and prejudice. This is an incredible book that I highly recommend.
