Now absolute power rests in the iron fist of Darth Sidious–the cunning Sith lord better known as the former Senator, now Emperor, Palpatine. But more remains to be done. Pockets of resistance in the galaxy must still be defeated and missing Jedi accounted for . . . and dealt with.

Like so many other fans, I already knew this story from many of the cutscenes of the actual game play. However, this depiction was like eating the cake with icing on top. Absolutely magnifique!

Historia
A barely employed tech worker has never felt they belonged. Not in society, not even in their own family. Their days are filled with loneliness, a struggle to survive and a desperate search for connection—even if that connection is merely virtual. Now, a black-market hacker promises to open a new world for them, and it works—in ways no human has ever experienced. They find a world of wonder, of possibilities and of danger—where their new virtual reality could mean the end of their physical reality. And what they discover could change the fate of humankind—forever.

A very creative piece of work
Revisado: 04-04-25
I usually admire Anne Rice for her descriptive powers in laying out a scene and in bringing us into the intimacy between two lovers. However, this was a pleasant surprise. Here she wove a very convincing tale bending the genre of vampires into another 'not-so-novel' direction but it worked!
Kudos to you Mrs. Anne Rice. Kudos I say!

Since the near-destruction of the Iron Hands, Raven Guard and Salamanders on Isstvan V, scattered warbands from these 'shattered Legions' have waged a guerrilla war on Horus' forces across the galaxy. Now, the crew of the Sisypheum are drawn into a covert assault on a hidden Alpha Legion outpost - an assault orchestrated by none other than the infamous warleader Shadrak Meduson himself. But what does Meduson really hope to make from such a bold move against the sons of Alpharius, arguably the undisputed masters of deception?

The action sequences are so vivid in the mind. The story alone is excellent, but the narration packs a punch. As with so many of these, I will listen several times more. I'm a helpless fan boy! Great action!

This was most certainly a worthy investment. I've listened to it already several times now. I have yet to implement all of the advice therein but I'm getting there. So that's a big win. Whoever you are considering the purchase of this book... you won't be disappointed.

Historia
The history of the Boston Tea Party is a hidden one. Why? Since it was a clandestine operation, all sorts of rumors and legends grew up around the event—many collected decades after the American Revolution had ended. At its core, however, the night of December 16, 1773, when colonials dumped tea from British ships into Boston Harbor, was more than a fight over tea and taxes. It was a struggle over the very nature of democracy and self-governance.

Interesting kibbles & bits of true American lore
Revisado: 03-17-24
This was quite a find. I went through it with some bias admittedly and was pleasantly surprised. The context upon which the story is built is immense but the author seamlessly manages to string it all together in a manner that was easily digestible all without missing a beat. He even includes some of the unsavory aspects of this ordeal like racism - as a convenient scapegoat by a number of the party organizers. The nearly 3 hour run time worked in it's favor because it means that this is the type of book that could be listened to again (which I will most certainly do). And the narration was exceptional.
The only reason I couldn't give it a 5 out of 5 was because so many of the participants, big and small, were so utterly devoid of principles. Ultimately, the colonists and crown were simply trying to one-up each other. And the two reasons the crown lost were because of the lengthy distance, but mostly because of a waning commitment of keeping their wayward children in line. The writing seemed to prance around all of this, at times making light of certain situations. I kept asking myself if this was stark objectivity or tacit approval for some of the worst behavior ever. Who can say? One thing's for sure: Out of the cauldron of fire and blood we get the fledgling nation of America... a definite win... so far.

Definitely the New Classic Star Trek
Revisado: 03-02-24
This will be a fantastic read for anybody who is a longtime Trekkie (like myself), and especially for fans of Seven of Nine. David Mack is a master storyteller! He writes Janeway the way we remember her back when she was Captain on Voyager. And 7 of 9 is a heap of sharp human complexity and female emotion. The author very elegantly graces the LGBT topic without going overboard but in a way that is tasteful and adds greater depth to the mystique of this half-human half-cyborg personality. And LaVoy!!! She was the perfect choice for its narration.
The success of the story makes the revelation that our heroine (7 of 9) eventually becoming Star Fleet, bittersweet. This was hinted at in the last season of Picard; which I didn't mind then; but that was long before this book came out. Now, I wished she had remained in the ranks of the Fenris Rangers. Had this been the case, I could easily see this being a new Star Trek spinoff.
Just imagine: Star Trek - Fenris Rangers

...and I have, in point of fact. This was a spectacular audiobook. The reading was so animated and the added sound effects helped in bringing the whole story to life.

It's brevity actually worked in its favor
Revisado: 02-29-24
I've always enjoyed an afrikan narration for a genuinely afrikan story; it adds to the authenticity. And yet, it was a little bland and even forgettable at certain intervals. Devoid of any significant depth, I struggled to see the point of it all. I wound up listening to the whole thing over and was again disappointed. For while the setting takes place in a mining town, the story veers off in another direction and ends up extolling the virtues of being a lover of stories, i.e, an avid reader.

I probably should've modified my expectations here
Revisado: 02-25-24
I'm a Karen Traviss fan. I think she is an accomplished writer. Over the years, I've noticed that in her case her best writing is on subjects that genuinely interest her (AI and Military ventures). She's done amazing work in the HALO series; which involves both topics. Her participation in Star Wars is also noteworthy.
While this story is militaristic, it's also one of her earlier pieces. I suppose she was still refining her craft. The plot is simplistic but not interesting enough to convince me to come back for book two.
