150 years after Dostoyevsky wrote his observations of the world around him, you’re drawn in his analysis of life, culture, politics and faith - all delivered in a style that is charming and engaging.

The director of the audio recording truly failed.

First, there was clearly no attempt to even try to get a Russian speaker to coach pronunciation. Even simple names are mangled, which ruins the audiobook for anyone familiar with Russian history or culture.

But the real crime is the attempt at bad Russian accents. The great Russian hero and saint, Alexander Nevsky, sounds like Anton Yelchin’s comical Chekhov from Star Trek. I can appreciate some humorous characterizations of characters who are written to sound funny - but Nevsky/Chekhov just put me over the edge.

If you want to make better sense of the events of our world, this is a great place to start.
This book presents a view of the new world order that is refreshingly different from that of the Western “intelligentsia”.
Imagine growing up as the grandson of Vyacheslav Molotov (yes, THAT Molotov), and serving in the administrations of Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and Putin - with a first-hand view of so many of the events that have shaped our world from the Space Race and Cuban Missile Crisis, to the collapse of the USSR and the criminal looting that followed, and into a new political and economic structure that Russia created over the past quarter-century!
From Ray Dalio, I learned how key world leaders like China’s Xi Jinping have much longer vision of their country’s future than that of the typical Western politician. This is another “long view” perspective, and offers us a richer tapestry than the “good vs evil” sound bites we often feed on.

HOWEVER, I found the production of the audiobook to be terrible, for which I blame the director more than the narrator. Did anyone even listen to the finished product? Given that this book is written by a Russian and includes a lot international names, places, and terms, you’d think the producers would have found a multilingual narrator. Not only does he butcher Russian names and terms to the point where I can’t understand them (as a native Russian speaker), but he also mis-pronounces the Italian “Lombardy” as the last name of Vince Lombardi. That’s just sloppy direction! At one point, he’s interrupted, you hear some background noises, and then he resumes reading. There’s poor breath control, and issues with the distance to the mic. Just all-around sloppiness in the production - which is a shame, because the material deserves a much more professional effort!

And by “important”, I mean that the material was based on Dr. Sowell’s doctoral thesis. It is, as you would expect, more dry - he had not developed his “voice” as a great synthesist and explainer/commentator on our history and our current state.

So don’t start your exploration of Thomas Sowell here. You might not make it out.

As for the performance, this is the first time I’ve heard an American pronunciation of “cápital” used in place of the German “Kapitál”. For a work on Marx, this is just laughable. Who at Audible reviews these recordings?

I’ve listened to many of Gogol’s works, both the comic and the historical. “Dead Souls” is my favorite test of a narrator’s performance, since the sample provided by Audible gives me enough content to judge the attitude of the reader to Gogol’s rich and diverse characters.

This «Рим» is singular in the narrator’s flatness of delivery. I wanted the exuberance of Respighi; but I got a lecture with a PowerPoint.

I appreciate Wayne Dyer's presentation of the Tao - he does a great job of relating it to current lifestyles, work, relationships.

What's frustrating about the Audible edition of his book is that the producers missed a key point in his introduction about how the book should be used. Each of the 81 verses is meant to be presented as a separate chapter, to be read and "processed" at a rate of one verse per day.

But the audiobook does not follow this format. Verses are presented back-to-back, with no chapter breaks or bookmarks - not even a musical cue (as in some of Dr. Dyer's other audiobooks) to let you know that one verse is ending and another is about to start. There are "chapters", but they seem to have no relationship to the content. Instead, each chapter is about 65 minutes long - I'm guessing that corresponds to the length of the audio CD's.

Providing a separate chapter for each verse would allow the listener to easily repeat the verse of the Tao that precedes Dr. Dyer's discussion. One could click forward through the chapter tracks to hear just the Tao verses alone - or find verses that applied to specific situations.
