In this small lakeside town, mothers bake their secrets into moon pies they feed to a silent blue girl. Beautiful and enigmatic...
Revisado: 05-01-21
Wonderful story brought to life by excellent narration. Wasn't what I expected, but was a thoughtful and introspective fairy tale.
Not for everyone, but recommended for people looking for something different.

Historia
In this short book illuminated by a deep understanding and love of humanity, John Steinbeck retells an old Mexican folk tale: the story of the great pearl, how it was found, and how it was lost. For the diver Kino, finding a magnificent pearl means the promise of a better life for his impoverished family. His dream blinds him to the greed and suspicions the pearl arouses in him and his neighbors, and even his loving wife cannot temper his obsession or stem the events leading to the tragedy. For Steinbeck, Kino and his wife illustrate the fall from innocence of people who believe that wealth erases all problems.

Historia
Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).

James Franco was the perfect narrator.

This was my first Vonnegut book, but it won't be the last. It's definitely a quirky story but highly recommended.

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Wow - What a fantastic listen
Revisado: 10-15-17
This history-as-entertainment book is smart, witty, and compassionate. I'm always impressed by how well-researched her work is.
Kudos also to the narrator, who keeps you engaged the entire time.
Highly recommended. :)

A Great Spy Caper
Revisado: 07-11-17
The Spy Who Couldn't Spell is an often lighthearted telling of a true story that is full of unexpected twists. It also serves as a good primer on cryptography, without delving in too deep and getting lost in the details of what is actually a rather intricate crime.
