Historia
After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out my next steps. Although...maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get boring. In fact, an adolescent dragon crash-landing on my landlord's shed is just the kind of excitement I need - especially when he brings his species leader to my door.

Not for me
Revisado: 04-22-25
I didn’t care for it. It is kind of silly. And I was confused the whole time about half the characters and their obvious backstory that I missed. Turns out this was a spinoff

Mostly good...some characters not so much
Revisado: 04-22-25
I really like Greg Tremblay and this performance was as good as expected. Zachary Johnson was a new to me performer and he was just OK for me. He made Silas seem more OTT than necessary with his large, loud personality. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
Max was thrown out of his house at 16 for being gay and is now a recovering addict who sold himself for drugs. He is an RN after clawing himself from the brink and has hired to be part of the nursing team taking care of Silas' dad (who I wished death upon even though it was not probable).
Silas is also a recovering addict who was sent to conversion therapy/torture camp and still going thru PTSD, engaged to his beard, wanting to take over the family company and make it more ethical. He is willing to do anything to take over from his dad.
The parents are so God awful I almost gave up a couple of times. Silas' dad was just miserable to everyone, especially to Silas' brother Eddie who was the best character IMO.
The guy that is assigned to run the company (the bad guy) is a little OTT as well...but thankfullyl we don't have to deal with him long.
It all works out in the end after some trials and tribulations and, God love him, Eddie.

Good start to a series
Revisado: 08-13-24
Performance is good.
This is my first book by this author (I think) and it was predictable but good.
Liked both characters and the setting. The story has its ups and downs. Everything gets wrapped up neatly by the end (almost too neatly but it was fine). There are hints at the next book being about Maddox and Issac which I would be interested in.

Historia
It's almost Christmas, and Emery Hazard finds himself face to face with his own personal nightmare: going on a double date with his partner - and boyhood crush - John-Henry Somerset. Hazard brings his boyfriend; Somers brings his estranged wife. When a strange call interrupts dinner, however, Hazard and his partner become witnesses to a shooting. The victims: Somers' father and the daughter of a high school friend. The crime is inexplicable. There is no apparent motive, no connection between the victims, and no explanation for how the shooter reached his targets.

ARRGGHHH
Revisado: 08-06-24
FRUSTRATING. That was the first word that came to mind when I finished this book. I’m in Hazard and Somerset hell! Pull. Your. Head. Out. Of. Your. Asses. How is f*cking Sherriff Bing the first person Somerset admitted to loving Hazard out loud? WTF?
And I seriously do not know if I could even forgive Somers for the sh!t he pulled as a kid. And the class of folks he gets lumped into because of the way he treated Hazard? GRRRR….
This is still a rough ride.
There is still a LOT of hate, bigotry, and homophobia in this book.
The case is gruesome.
Somerset’s mom is a piece of work.
I don’t know whether I like Nico.
I second what several people have said about the narration. It’s hard to tell people apart sometimes.

I'm not sure if I liked this...
Revisado: 07-16-24
This book reminds me so much of the TV show Dallas I grew up watching. I'm not sure if I liked it or not - hence the 3 stars. There is a lot of drama, a lot of things that you just have to roll with, and apparently 8 more books. Not sure if I have the strength to get through the whole series right now so putting a pin in this one.
Sean Crisden does a good job with the audio as always!

Ari had a game plan for life: shoot people. Get money. Hang out with fellow criminal friends. He saw absolutely no reason to change that plan until one dark night in Memphis, when a little girl reached out to him with pocket change and a desperate plea for him to help her. Adopting an abused little girl off the streets was, needless to say, not part of the plan. Ari had no idea what he was doing with an eight year old. He especially didn’t know how to juggle taking contracts and raising a little girl.

Hit or miss with this author
Revisado: 06-21-24
This author is hit or miss for me and this one was just OK for me. There was A LOT of suspended reality and not a whole lot of relationship building plus predictability. I'm not sure if I will continue with the series...maybe after I finish the Jon and Mack series by this author.
The audio was pretty good...I like Antonio Amato's voice but it was hard to diferentiate between characters with him. Iggy Toma is great as always.

Love this book adn these characters!
Revisado: 03-22-24
Joel Leslie does it again! Great performance of a great story!
Man, I could not put this one down. I absolutely loved the banter between the characters – it made me laugh out loud so many times. It is always mind boggling to me how Ms. Morton can take so many serious issues and still make me laugh. There’s a serial killer on the loose and a nasty one at that, and he’s killing homeless people because he just doesn’t like them and thinks they’re worthless. There is major homophobia and hatred of psychics. A new character has his sights set on Levi and Blue has his typical bouts of self-doubt. Meanwhile I’m over here laughing at something Blue or Will quips at each other.
I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of the book, wondering how the killer was going to react and when. Blue of course doesn’t help this because he rushes headfirst into very sketchy situations (still).
The relationship between Blue and Levi gets stronger as well. Blue has some self-doubt issues (again) and Levi is quick to reassure him and make him understand how much he’s loved. Blue also shows Levi how important he and his career are to him, and they just really strengthen their bond.
I really loved seeing Blue and Will being a little squishy with each other. They are faced with their past a few times in the book, and it really makes them appreciate what they have now and shows the importance of found family.
Tom is as sarcastic and funny as ever. Rosalind steals the show in this one too.
The epilogue is PERFECT! I really hope we get another book with this group.

These characters remind me a lot of Geordie and Levi in the Leaning Into series by Ms. Hayes but with the added bonus of a second chance romance.
I liked that this was low angst and sweet. Just what I needed. This is a great cast of characters (although there are a lot of them and I lost track a time or two)!

His own marriage was a whirlwind affair that ended before the ink could dry on the wedding certificate. Nevertheless, even with his divorce pending, he’s getting by. Joel Leslie makes every book better
Revisado: 10-27-23
Joel Leslie's performance of books always seems to make books so much better than when reading them. He shed a different light on Lachlan and I didn't dislike him nearly as much when listening instead of reading. I did still dislike how he treated Joe during their marriage intially and it felt like Joe was taking more of the blame than he should have for the failure.
However, Joel's performance couldn't make Janice any more likeable...and honestly I think I hated her more listening to her. It is a testament to his talent that the amount of time dedicated to the wedding and wedding party in Scotland didn't seem to bother me as much when listening instead of reading.
I recommend listening over reading any day!
Including original review from reading the ebook.
I loved Joe when we met him in Vow Maker, so I was very excited to see him get a book. Some of this book was fantastic and some of it wasn’t. I HATE a lack of communication between main characters, especially when that is the cause of the major angst and the really detailed story of other people getting married completely put me off.
I know Joe is a wedding planner, but the details about Erica and Ryan’s wedding went on too much and took away from Joe and Lachlan’s story. I started to skim when we were getting details about their nuptials.
They have a definite meet cute and as much as I liked Lachlan when we meet him and how much he likes Joe, he pissed me off with the way he treated Joe when they get married. I was also frustrated that all the angst happened off-page and we just get pulled in after the fact. And the why was a bit contradictory…he was scared that Joe was pulling away, so he thought a shotgun wedding was the answer but when he had him as a husband he kept him at arm’s length because of how he felt?
When the two of them are together at the few weddings at the beginning they were great together – hot sexual chemistry, great banter, and they seemed to hit it off emotionally, even though Lachlan denied it. Then we skipped to the angst and the boring wedding…but after that when they are snowed in at the hotel in Scotland, they’re back to being great together. And then all is well.
I would have liked a little more between them working well as husbands but I guess we’re OK for now. It looks like this is the start of a series and I’m assuming Jeb/Arthur and then Rafferty will get books which I’m down for…as long as we don’t have a lot of lack of or miscommunication and long wedding details.
