Can't wait for the next one.
Revisado: 02-11-25
I often read crime thrillers and like ones that don't have much gore. I also like getting to know the characters and laughing out loud which I find with this author. Seriously looking forward to more books from her, and I enjoy the narrator's style.

Historia
The body of a young woman is found by a river outside Belfast and Detective Sergeant Ryan McBride makes a heart-wrenching discovery at the scene, a discovery he chooses to hide even though it could cost him the investigation—and his career. The victim was a loner but well-liked. Why would someone want to harm her? And is her murder connected to a rapist who's stalking the local pubs? As Ryan untangles a web of deception and lies, his suspects die one by one, leading him to a dangerous family secret and a murderer who will stop at nothing to keep it.

I love finding a new to me author. I tire of sifting through all the so-so books in this genre to find a real gem but I found one.

Eagerly Awaited.
Revisado: 04-25-24
The St. Cyr mysteries are one of my favorites. This one didn't disappoint. C.H. Harris is just a great storyteller. I appreciate that she is filling out the supporting cast's characters while spinning a great new tale, I can't wait for the next novel in this series.
I know finding a narrator after the retirement of Davina Porter can't be easy. I am afraid Amy Scanlon didn't do it for me, I was distracted by her interpretation of the characters and who was speaking was hard to follow.

Historia
Sir Tode has finally died at the age of 93. Lady Tode wants to leave the country to spend her remaining years in Capri. Unfortunately, her three tiresome children are either unwilling, or unable (too mad, too lefty or too happy in Australia), to take on management of their large and important home, so the mantle passes to a distant relative and his glamorous wife. Not long after the new owners take over, Lady Tode is found dead in the mausoleum. Accident? Or is there more going on behind the scenes of Tode Hall than an outsider would ever guess?

I thoroughly enjoyed this and will be reading the others. Narrator Penelope Rawlings' performances were spot on,
she had India down pat, as British Valley Girl which just cracked me up. An excellent light read.

Historia
Among the workhouses and pudding shops of South London, Private Detective William Arrowood is presented with far grittier, more violent, and considerably less well-paid cases than Sherlock Holmes. Arrowood has no doubt who is the better detective, and when Mr. and Mrs. Barclay engage him to find their estranged daughter, Birdie, he’s sure it won’t be long before he and his assistant, Barnett, have tracked her down.

I would have enjoyed this more if...
Revisado: 05-26-23
...Arrowwood wasn't such a slob, drug addict, bad-tempered, and just disgusting. The saving graces were the other characters and the heartbreaking story. The poverty and lack of social conscience in the Victorian era are well known and this story captures that very well. Will I read on? I don't think so.

I always look forward to the continuing story of the St. Cyr's. I was not disappointed with all the twists and turns you could want as well as the interesting characters. On the cusp of the Battle of Waterloo, Ms. Harris conveys the tension of that time in London, Such a good story I was sorry to finish. I can't wait until next spring.

His name was Feliks. He came to London to commit a murder that would change history. A master manipulator, he had many weapons at his command, but against him were ranged the whole of the English police, a brilliant and powerful lord, and the young Winston Churchill himself. These odds would have stopped any man in the world - except the man from St. Petersburg.

Historia
Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

England, 1924. Lady Adelaide Compton has recently (and satisfactorily) interred her husband, Major Rupert Charles Cressleigh Compton, hero of the Somme, in the family vault in the village churchyard. Rupert died by smashing his Hispano-Suiza on a Cotswold country road while carrying a French mademoiselle in the passenger seat. With the house now Addie's, needed improvements in hand, and a weekend house party underway, how inconvenient of Rupert to turn up - not in the flesh, but as a spirit! Rupert has to perform a few good deeds before becoming welcomed to heaven.
