Historia
David Fulmer won the Shamus Award for Best First P.I. Novel for his debut Chasing the Devil's Tail. In The Dying Crapshooter's Blues, he spins a riveting tale set amid the hustle and bustle of 1920s Atlanta. On the same night a drunk cop shoots a gambler, a haul of priceless jewels is stolen - setting the stage for a mystery as complex and steeped in the blues as the city of Atlanta itself.

A cast of characters that are hard to forget
Revisado: 09-07-22
This plot could probably be simplified to a paragraph. But the author's ability to paint images with words musuc and lyrics is like an adult picture book. Full of color, shapes and faces for vivid imaginations. Its hard to step back into the real world after reading a few chapters.

Preposterous and not in a good way
Revisado: 03-29-22
There was nothing in this book that brought suspense, mystery or even much of a climax. The premise of an over- involved psychologist- sleuth who was decredentialed because of her unconventional approach was a no-starter from the beginning. Save your credit.

Historia
Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Can music unite us?
Revisado: 03-13-22
The mystery of a lost violin is really a sub-plot for a lesson in the power of music for teaching us about race and love of all people- especially those not like us. For anyone who thinks we are beyond those lessons read. And, think again.

Historia
Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Such a giant leap forward in all ways
Revisado: 02-28-22
it's hard to believe the growth in plot, characterization and atmosphere this book represents. All the good things about a Lucy Foley book but much more of of it. There's also an overriding question about what is evil and right or wrong. So appropriate for today's readers. Next, please!

Historia
In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family, too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back to the people and places of his past, as deadly secrets hidden at their hearts are revealed.

A jumble of characters a rambling plot
Revisado: 01-19-22
What happens when you write a mystery and spread the guilt among the characters? The motivations and the spark for evil is diluted. No one has been truly able to do this except Christie, P.D. James and Tana French. This was an interesting but highly flawed exercise. it may make a doable tv series adaptation with the right actors but not compelling reading.

Historia
With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations - and where her destiny awaits. Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses.

When a series of murders announces his return, Frieda must emerge from the shadows to confront her nemesis. And it's a showdown she might not survive.

might be a great tv series but...
Revisado: 11-14-21
I found the play on the event sequence failed as an experiment in novel form. But, it might make an interesting tv script and series. I found less of interest in the psychology of the characters and the plot dragged still with the right casting it could be made into something more. it needs an adaptation. Could be fun.
