Historia
Ambrose "Slay" Slater never thought he'd end up this way. His lover left him for his best friend and while he was distracted, grieving that loss, the Gols captured him, dragged him off to their infernal underground city, where he's been a prisoner ever since. At first, he imagined Ash Valley would immediately mount a rescue, but he might rot in this dungeon before that happens. If need be, he'll reduce Golgerra to rubble himself because he's got anger to burn.

Series ended with a whimper
Revisado: 10-19-24
I got to about the 40% mark in this book before i started skipping whole chapters. And I only bothered to finish in the hope of seeing the characters from the first 4 books. I might've at least liked the pairing if the heroine hadn't had a personality transplant. But even if the characters had been interesting (they were not), or had chemistry together (they did not) - the story still would've been a terrible combo of ludicrous and tedious. The "revolution" and it's aftermath were just bad

It's 1920, and Christmas is coming. Major Lennox finds a body on his doorstep - why on his doorstep? Was it to do with the Countess? Was it about the ruby necklace? Lennox goes to Melrose Court, home to his uncle, Lord Melrose, to uncover the mystery. But then, the murders begin, and it snows, and it all becomes very complicated.

Charming murder mystery
Revisado: 09-18-24
Well written, well constructed murder mystery with an excellent narrator! The lead is likeable and all of the other characters, even very minor characters, are interesting and enjoyable - and the narrator impressively differentiates between all of them.

Historia
There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside; it's in the very distant city of Damascus. Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them, and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy, and a couple of mysterious ladies.

Well written mystery adventure with great narrator
Revisado: 10-01-23
The author is so good at creating a sense of time and place that I can practically see the characters and settings while listening to the story. I thoroughly enjoy the main characters and I'm consistently impressed by the care taken to flesh out the ancillary characters as well. The author is also very, very good at crafting a mystery; one of the best writers of historical mysteries that I've found. oh! and the narrator is excellent. This book was especially impressive since there were so many characters, and amongst them were characters from different classes, different countries and different regions within those countries - and I never had to guess which one was speaking. This is a great partnership

Historia
How do you rebuild your life when your one true love is the one who ruins it? Joanna Sherwood, the Countess of Carew, has always been wildly in love with Adrian Delacourt, the darkly handsome and devastatingly charming Duke of Roxbury. When they wed, it was her dream come true - a dream that quickly turned to a nightmare as her husband accused her of infidelity and sullied her good name in Regency society. It was only a desperate flight to Italy with her husband's best friend at her side and his promise to rescue her through a new marriage that saved her sanity.

Characters are great, pacing is a little odd
Revisado: 12-21-22
This is (for the most part) a well-written regency with great characters and interesting relationships. There’s really good build-up in the relationship between the couple throughout the story. The secondary characters were interesting and well fleshed out. It’s a very good book up until the end, which feels rushed and crammed with plot points. The last two chapters are an extremely tedious hour of telling instead of showing - an unsubtle, overwritten and boring justification for the heroine’s behavior that read like a combination of a bad soap opera scene and a C- freshman psych paper.
The narrator didn’t really differentiate between characters unless the character had an accent. And her pronunciation of any word ending in “ng” was so grating that I actively avoid any other books that she reads.

Stories are excellent, narration is unfortunate
Revisado: 11-08-22
Each of these stories is excellent. These are well crafted regency mysteries with well-developed characters. They are well-written and well researched but the narration is unfortunate. The narrator does differentiate between characters but they all (men, women and children) sound like elderly ladies - and every! single! sentence! is read as if it includes multiple exclamation points. It’s so overdone that it’s difficult to actually make sense of the story.

Historia
On the eve of her marriage to George Hazelton, Frances has a great deal more on her mind than flowers and seating arrangements. The Connors and the Bainbridges, two families of American robber barons, have taken up residence in London, and their bitter rivalry is spilling over into the highest social circles. At the request of her brother, Alonzo, who is quite taken with Miss Madeline Connor, Frances has invited the Connor family to her wedding. Meanwhile, Frances’s mother has invited Mr. Bainbridge, and Frances fears the nuptials may end up being newspaper-worthy for all the wrong reasons.

Bit of a letdown
Revisado: 10-06-22
The mystery was disappointing. I figured out the culprit and the motive pretty quickly; the previous mysteries were more engaging and much less transparent. I was also disappointed with Frances & George. They got married and nothing really changed except that she moved next door. I think being trapped by the circumstances made the whole book feel like it wasn’t going anywhere

Narrator was better than the story
Revisado: 11-12-21
Ellen Archer was excellent. The heroine of the story seems to be learning to be an adult at 30 - so she’s a little tiresome.
SPOILER
I hope the heroine’s mother-in-law convinces her husband’s heir to sue her on behalf of the estate for the value of the pearls
