Historia
Why do women live longer than men? Why do women have menopause? Why are women more likely to get Alzheimer’s? Why do girls score better at every academic subject than boys until puberty, when suddenly their scores plummet? And does the female brain really exist? In Eve, Cat Bohannon answers questions scientists should have been addressing for decades. With boundless curiosity and sharp wit, she covers the past 200 million years to explain the specific science behind the development of the female sex.

intriguing science
Revisado: 02-27-25
stick with intriguing science and entertaining fiction, could leave out the politics...
memorable moments-
1) hearing section - where author's boyfriend(?) plays video games very loud - exposing the state of male capacity to work and achieve.
2) voice section - Hillary Clinton's voice during the DNC acceptance speech.
overall very good

Historia
Sentenced to life imprisonment in the penal colony of French Guiana for a crime he did not commit, Henri Charriere became obsessed with one goal: escape. After planning and executing a series of treacherous yet failed attempts over many years, he was eventually sent to the notorious prison Devil's Island, a place from which no one had ever escaped - until Papillon.

trial after trial... heart overcomes how little control we actually have in this life
Revisado: 05-08-24
I love the style of writing of the times... life was different though struggles were similar. The impact of technology was less but very notable. The author observed how improvements in technology, though making life easier, also further separated people,.. especially in the poor treatment of others. Very predictive of where we're at today and the inhumane treatment of people in general.
I'll certainly reread this. And would love to see a map of the islands and escapes... I wonder what these French prison facilities look like today?

Historia
Where the Light Fell is a gripping family narrative set against a turbulent time in post-World War II America, shaped by the collision of Southern fundamentalism with the mounting pressures of the civil rights movement and '60s-era forces of social change. In piecing together his fragmented personal history and his search for redemption, Yancey gives testament to the enduring power of our hunger for truth and the possibility of faith rooted in grace instead of fear.

difficult, but in a good way
Revisado: 06-20-22
Thank you Philip for sharing this.
As someone who's familiar with difficult family relationships and has experienced heart ache as adult siblings lives are shaped by parents... this book was very difficult for me. At the same time, I needed this book.
As a parent, every minute spent with my children has impact and value. Children are a gift, an investment. Parents, love children no matter how imperfect we are, and seek forgiveness from them often.

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

George Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution is an intimate part of our contemporary culture, quoted so often that we tend to forget who wrote the original words! This must-read is also a must-listen!

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

eye opening
Revisado: 06-08-20
A well organized and great book of facts not taught in history class... Honestly, after growing up in 'integrated' communities and working in integrated organizations, i appreciated the differences in the people i worked with, but didn't understand how little i knew about how their parents and grandparents were treated by the government and people in general. thank you for opening my eyes
