not mcewens best
Revisado: 05-17-19
It was an interesting story and provocative in some of the subjects that raised. The narrator was too old sounding for the narrator of the book which caused regular disconnection in me as a listener

Historia
In a narrative as beguiling and mysterious as memory itself - shadowed and luminous at once - we follow the story of 14-year-old Nathaniel, and his older sister, Rachel. In 1945, just after World War II, they stay behind in London when their parents move to Singapore, leaving them in the care of a mysterious figure named The Moth. They suspect he might be a criminal, and they grow both more convinced and less concerned as they come to know his eccentric crew of friends: men and women joined by a shared history of unspecified service during the war.

Historia
From one of Granta's Best of Young American Novelists comes Certain American States, whose insightful and lonely stories beg you to discover the emotional universes hiding at their cores. Catherine Lacey brings her narrative mastery to Certain American States, her first collection of short stories. As with her acclaimed novels, she gives life to a group of subtly complex, instantly memorable characters whose searches for love, struggles with grief, and tentative journeys into the minutiae of the human condition are simultaneously gripping and devastating.

Fun

a set tof thought provoking, well crafted, and fun to hear short stories from a talented writer. I especially liked Alex Karpovsky's droll reading of a number of stories written from a male POV.

Historia
Hellsmouth, an indomitable thoroughbred with the blood of Triple Crown winners in her veins, runs for the glory of the Forge family, one of Kentucky's oldest and most powerful dynasties. Henry Forge has partnered with his daughter, Henrietta, in an endeavor of raw obsession: to breed the next superhorse, the next Secretariat. But when Allmon Shaughnessy, an ambitious young black man, comes to work on their farm after a stint in prison, the violence of the Forges' history and the exigencies of appetite are brought starkly into view.

the great American novel
Revisado: 05-05-18
loved it. it was like a 21st century Moby Dick, dealing with the big themes in American history. Slavery, racism, unequal distribution of wealth, all woven into a compelling story. the characters are so vivid, and the writing and voices of the characters is so true, unique, and compelling. I didn't want it to end.

Historia
Nearly two weeks early, on March 3, 1947, in the maternity ward of Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, Archibald Isaac Ferguson, the one and only child of Rose and Stanley Ferguson, is born. From that single beginning, Ferguson’s life will take four simultaneous and independent fictional paths. Four identical Fergusons made of the same DNA, four boys who are the same boy, go on to lead four parallel and entirely different lives. Family fortunes diverge. Athletic skills and sex lives and friendships and intellectual passions contrast.

I liked that the author read the book. the concept of the book was clever, and the authors explanation at the end tied it all up nicely for me.

Unique Story, Well Told

Where does The Sympathizer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
the story is good. The narration was distracting. The narrator mispronounced, garbled or swallowed about a word per page. It was quite distracting and frustrating.I appreciate the creative decision to have someone with a Vietnamese accent read the book, but I found myself frequently rewinding because i said to myself "what did he say?" or "what was that word?" The problem with the accent wasn't consistently "l"s or "r"s, there was a slight Tom Brokaw-ish slurry, mush-mouthed quality to the speech.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sympathizer?
the assassination of the crapulent major.
What didn’t you like about Francois Chau’s performance?
