American Marriage by, Tayari Jones,
is a brilliant, 320 page consummation of words. The 2018, Oprah Book Club novel, leads readers on passages of racial injustices, intertwined with intricacies of a young matrimony--starring Roy, and Celestial (AKA, Georgia). How the couple came to be as one and how they came to be undone as three, traverses the novel. In a time where world's collude and collapse, by the way of love, anger and various heartbreaking events, Jones’ gripping writing command, vacillates from one character to the next. From letters, to unexpected visits--back and forth through time. Never ostracizing her reader, but rather pulling them in through family histories, Jones, underscores present dilemmas, along with current pain, felt by people who love in spite of obstacles shared by the forsaken and abandoned. I will be reading everything Jones has to offer.

Trevor Noah's, coming of age story, Born A Crime, vividly invites readers/listeners into his real-life account of Apartheid. The long-standing after effects, and the global relevance are told with humor and humility, endearing you to Noah; along with those who suffered under the discrmiminatory system of oppression. Noah's transparency afforded me many laughs. And his love for his mother was heartfelt throughout. The title and Noah's truth of being born a crime, had me anticipating a heavy and depressing experience, however, it was the opposite, despite the content.

Listening to The Last Black Unicorn can only endear listeners to Ms. Haddish. She shares her raw pain in a manner that makes you laugh and and cry simultaneously. As I read, I thought of several people who could benefit from hearing her story; in hopes that it would help them push through their barriers.
