Historia
This novel centers on the figure of Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, a member of the dying class of the landed gentry, who spends most of his time lying in bed gazing at life in an apathetic daze, encouraged by his equally lazy servant Zakhar and routinely swindled by his acquaintances. But this torpid existence comes to an end when, spurred on by his crumbling finances, the love of a woman, and the reproaches of his friend, the hardworking Schtoltz, Oblomov finds that he must engage with the real world and face up to his commitments.

Narrator fail
Revisado: 08-18-21
The narrators voice is so weirdly throaty you can barely hear his pronunciation, unfortunately the recording artist performance sort of ruins it. I had her read most of it. Otherwise have the potential to be an interesting story

Historia
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with a urgent cry for help. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly dug open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Meanwhile the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death.

Like exposition in a movie it explains way too much and asumes the audience are idiots. Plus just generally boring and the accent gets old quickly.

Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Probably hard to appreciate considering how overexposed we are to vampires but it is interesting to see some early foundations of vampire lore. I cannot tolerate the narrators besides the first one I had to read the rest of it because of this. Also interesting to see how he draws on the popularity of Gothic literature, as well as the profound xenophobia that that island still harbors

Historia
One of the world’s greatest novelists, Leo Tolstoy was also the author of a number of superb short stories, one of his best known being “The Kreutzer Sonata.” This macabre story involves the murder of a wife by her husband. It is a penetrating study of jealousy as well as a piercing complaint about the way in which society educates men and women in matters of sex - a serious condemnation of the mores and attitudes of the wealthy, educated class.

Not a good Intro to Tolstoy
Revisado: 05-23-21
I mean, It’s not a novel- the “setting” and “characters” are just an excuse to make you suffer through the pontifical rant of a sociopath. So either it’s a meta criticism of monkish, hyper-religious beliefs, or Tolstoy is a nut.
Narrator is decent but poorly edited as the volume often fluctuates.

I mean, the only reason to do this is to understand all of the tropes that he created for the later authors – tropes that the later authors seriously improved upon. This is not a great work of literature it’s just a weird, rushed, archetype that you ought to be exposed to if interested in literature/Gothic fiction

New to Russian literature, and as in need of short stories and lord did this hit the spot. Narrator was spot on, and the stories were so unique and entirely comforting to my nihilistic nature. He packs so much emotion and imagery into 20 minutes more than many novelist can achieve in 20 hours
