Historia
10 June 1907, Peking. Five cars set off in a desperate race across two continents on the verge of revolution. An Italian prince and his chauffeur, a French racing driver, a conman and various journalists battle over steep mountain ranges and across the arid vastness of the Gobi Desert. The contestants need teams of helpers to drag their primitive cars up narrow gorges, lift them over rough terrain and float them across rivers. Updates on their progress, sent by telegram, are eagerly devoured by millions in one of the first ever global news stories. Their destination: Paris.

Such a missed opportunity
Revisado: 01-20-25
When I first read the outline for this story I imagined an adventurous tale of daredevil racers pitting their skills against one another in a race against time itself as the politics of an impending war loomed large. Instead it reads as a very pedestrian account peppered with dull facts as if the writer is presenting a thesis. Too bad, for as an idea it offers fantastic possibilities!

So dull I couldn’t last more than a few chapters...
Revisado: 11-09-20
This is a perfect example of a book that should never have made it out of the publishing house.
A dull and uninspired sequence of words (to call it writing would be misleading) with equally wooden dialogue, bland characters and a plot that leads to a full night’s sleep.
And then there’s the narration, which adds more blandness to this tasteless fare. Zzzzz
Don’t waste your credits! Unfortunately I did and was unable to return this book to Audible, for some reason...

Born to missionary parents in lawless central Africa, Munroe took up with an infamous gunrunner and his mercenary crew when she was just fourteen. As his protégé, she earned the respect of the jungle's most dangerous men, cultivating her own reputation for years until something sent her running. it should be called "The Somnambulist"
Revisado: 05-16-11
I took this book based on its blazing review; all the elements of a good yarn were there - the gun for hire, the mystery of the missing daughter of a wealthy industrialist, the deadly African jungle. Instead I got a deadpan drone about a character that killed me with boredom. I havent slept so well in ages!
