younglings behaving like adults
Revisado: 02-27-25
this author seems to not understand kids. Mill Alibeth might as well be a 30-year-old Jedi Master based on the way this writer treats her character. absurd for a 5-10 year old. story was completely forgettable. yes, we know, Anakin is impulsive. yes, we know, padme is a senator. yes, we know, Obi-Wan is in the details. yes, we know, Mace windu is a badass. this book is tiresome and dull. I struggled to finish it. three stars is generous but the story gets two.

Historia
When Muslim fundamentalists blow up a key Soviet oil complex, making an already critical oil shortage calamitous, the Russians figure they are going to have to take things into their own hands. They plan to seize the Persian Gulf, and more ambitiously, to neutralize NATO. Thus begins Red Storm, an audacious gamble that uses diplomatic maneuver to cloak a crash military build-up.

couldn't finish it
Revisado: 08-22-24
I spent a year trying to get through this dull novel. giving it a try every month for a while and then getting bored again. I was determined to get through it but I just can't. after sitting in my library for a year and a half, I finally threw in the towel. it's not because of the date. I was eager for a Cold War ww3 story and it always wanted to read this, but it was so disappointing. Clancy gets bogged down in pointless details like damage control of a ship and tedious detail over a scout team hiking through the mountains. meanwhile, there's a war going on somewhere... I got through half of it before I had to quit because with 12 hours still to go, there are many more good books waiting for me and life is short. too short for a dull novel.

Historia
Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

poor audio quality
Revisado: 08-15-24
every time I listen to this title, I have to adjust the audio settings in my vehicle because it was recorded with bass turned up too high. I love the story but poor audio is unacceptable in a professional audio production. this almost warrants a refund. almost..

some good and useful information
Revisado: 06-25-24
I learned a few new things from this book but it quickly became tedious and I was not able to finish it because of too much repetitive information. If you take the word nice out of the manuscript, the book would be half as long. The word started to become anathema to me. I know that's the subject of the book, but come on! Nice nice nice nice nice nice nice nice nice. Don't be a nice guy. okay we freaking get it from the title of the book! so I don't know, I think this entire book could have been a 60-minute YouTube video.

bloody boring
Revisado: 11-13-23
I've given up on this title in the past and decided to give it another try after someone recommended it. it is so bloody boring that I am having a hard time finishing at the halfway point. The parties in the story are not interesting. they're not even remotely interesting. I don't care what happens. at this point, the contrived drama between some art group and terrorists and some irrelevant planet means nothing and there's no point continuing on with that plot. there's very little happening between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan that we don't already know. this adventure does not further their characters at all. it is a complete waste of time. I am determined to finish this awful book the second time through but two stars is generous.

narrator sighing and grunting too often
Revisado: 10-18-23
I got really far into this novel before I just couldn't take the narrator anymore. every sentence begin to great at my nerves because he kept inserting sighs and grunts in nearly every sentence. Even when the scene doesn't call for any such emotion. after you've heard sign and grunting a couple hundred times in 1 hour you'll get tired of it. after a while I wasn't able to pay attention to the story because like Chinese water torture, I was waiting for the next drop to fall, and it always did. Don't think I'll be able to finish this. I'm going to switch to the Kindle edition and read it myself.

poorly written nerd humor does not hold up
Revisado: 10-02-23
I can't explain 70,000 five-star reviews, only to question humanity for finding this so beloved. The writing is like Star Trek fanfiction. there is only so much pop culture humor that I can put up with. this damn story is supposed to take place 200 years in the future but it is filled with 20th century gags. does that make any damn sense? isn't that similar to someone today writing a book filled with pop culture references from the early 1800s??? why would anyone do that? because no one is going to get any of those references 200 years later. anytime the Bob gang needs something to solve a problem, they just bang their heads together and in a few minutes they've got their solution and on to the next fake contrived dilemma. this book is like an IT employee to-do list. it is the same kind of lowbrow low IQ humor that you find in John scalzi's books.
The narrator was fine but loses points for sighing way too often. is that even in the book?
