Historia
Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever, and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.

incredible concept, wasted potential
Revisado: 08-27-23
I read the synopsis and was beyond excited to start it. narrator is fine, nothing extraordinary, but that might be because the characters and style of writing give Wheaton little to work with. the world itself and the concept is awesome but is absolutely wasted on the lackluster writing style.
Every time I heard "he said I say" it felt like a cactus spike in my ears, it completely threw me off following the story or actively listening to the characters. how did THAT ending almost every speaking sentence make it past the editor?
the story lacks momentum despite it being set in a very scifi inspired world, and falls flat as it never picks up until the last 3rd of the book. I think it might be because it's not interesting to listen too, it doesn't make room to make the reader anxious or expecting, a mystery is almost immediately resolved by flashback dialog or a "AHA" moment by a character.
I felt like I was listening to a 5 part drawn out csi episode where the only action is flashbacks to the past that are suppose to give shock value to the present day.
honestly I'm sad about not liking it because it had incredible potential but the story is a basic cop tale with characters that feel empty and picked off a shelf of stereotypes for the cop genre, and they go through little to no development over 9 hours. hope the other books by Scalzi are better bc again the concept and the technical part of the book is incredible, everything else needs a dictionary.

Historia
We are stuck in 'Infinite Browsing Mode' - swiping through endless dating profiles without committing to a single partner, jumping from place to place searching for the next big thing, refusing to make any decision that might close us off from an even better choice we imagine is around the corner. This culture of restlessness and indecision, Davis argues, is causing tension in the lives of young people today. In Dedicated, Davis examines this quagmire, as well as the counterculture of committers who have made it to the other side.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

perfect sci fi in every way
Revisado: 04-24-22
wow, this bool blew me away. the perfect combination of realistic space logistics and science coupled with beautiful characters and momentum of story, this was perfect in every way. Porter did a fantastic job as narrator, he gives Grace the life and emotion needed to carry over his excitement for science as well as his fallable human nature. i giggled and cried and gripped my tea cup in perfect suspense for almost the entirety of this book. i cant remember the last time i finished a book so fast on audible but it was worth it!

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

abrupt ending
Revisado: 11-09-21
spent the whole book on the edge of knowing what was going on and the point of it all, just to end up at what i personally felt was an unsatisfactory ending. the writing itself is phenomonal and the story is kept pace well, its just all the questions unanswered that takes me down a bit. of course im sure this was Fabers intention, but i feel a work so intricately detailed and a world built just beyond reach deserves its specifics revealed.

Historia
Catherine has been enjoying the single life for long enough to know a good catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic, spontaneous – Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell. But there is a darker side to Lee. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behaviour means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape.

slow start, but tense the whole way
Revisado: 12-28-19
listening to this probably is the closest thing i could come to describing the feeling of dragging a rubber band piece by piece until it snaps.
for me the start is a little slow, but taking this back and forth to really get us familiar with cathrine and her abuser, was really the way to go. it pulls you in, you want to know how it ends, how it goes. i didnt think i would enjoy it as much as i did, stories about domestic abuse always make me feel sick since its often based on truth. but regardless, this emotional approach to how cathy overcame her abuse, and the insufrable unchanging nature of lee, really painted a nerve-racking story of inner strength, resolved by outer forces of compassion and love.

Historia
Myles and Beckett Fowl are twins, but the two boys are wildly different. Beckett is blonde, messy and sulks whenever he has to wear clothes. Myles is impeccably neat, has an IQ of 170 and 3-D prints a fresh suit every day - just like his older brother, Artemis Fowl. A week after their 11th birthday the twins are left in the care of house security system NANNI for a single night. In that time, they befriend a troll on the run from a nefarious nobleman and an interrogating nun, both of whom need the magical creature for their own gain....

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

Ive been a fan of the Alien series for years, and this is sure a great addition to the universe. The cast did this story absolute justice and did a great performance. The visuals being described throughout were just enough to establish a base for the imagination, and let the listener immerge themselves in a terrifying situation. Really enjoyed this sidepiece and the bigger pictures being drawn!

Back In Time
Revisado: 09-15-18
I've been reading this series of books on and off since I was 10 years old, and I still enjoy them wholeheartidly in my mid-20s. I keep coming back to the characters, the adventure and the quick wit of these wonderful books. An easy read and easily followed, but beyond exciting, listening to it is like watching a great action/comedy in your head. How Colfer deals with the back and forths of time continuum theory is admirable, and nothing but fun. A huge plus is the short story at the end where we get to hear about Holly's initiation in to L.E.P and it is nothing but the juiciest cherry on top of an already exciting book.

A Great Fun Listen
Revisado: 09-08-18
As a long time fan of this book series, I find myself returning to them like a safe place every time I feel down. The prod on this was excellent and O'Brien is wonderful at giving all characters their own distinct voice, making the listening even more enjoyable. I really recommend starting this series if you want a light read full of humour and at times, emotional rollercoasters. Though it is a teen series I still enjoy it fully in my mid-20s, the themes of magic and technology blending together gives the world and my imagination a certain blue spark.
