I Can't Believe Just How Bad This Audio Book Is

If your idea of a good read is a cartoonish story about a loud, obnoxious, immature, and over the top bratty 10 year old in a mid-twenties man's body dropping an endless stream of F-Bombs and somehow saving the universe almost single handedly then this story might be for you. If you like your protagonists to be believable, your bad guys to have a higher IQ than a cabbage, and your stories to make sense then it's probably not for you.

What could Jamie McFarlane have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Ditch domestic violence as Tabby's "funny" personality trait. Immaturity, seething anger, and violence seem to be her only personality traits and this has gotten way old.

All of the aliens, especially the chicken-people are way too over the top.

Resurrect Liem's brains which seem to have died.

Have you listened to any of Mikael Naramore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to the whole series so far and he always does a great job.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I'm very disappointed in the writing. More than anything it made me think of Fonzie jumping the shark in a desperate attempt to reboot that series. Using stupidity and over the top chicken-people as plot devices brough shark jumping to mind.

Any additional comments?

I could not bring myself to finish finish this one.

Absolutely the best action adventure that I've read in the last decade. I highly recommend this book.

The story reminds me of the Saturday morning sci-fi serials of 1950s, a fun escapist romp but in many ways utterly ridiculous. For example, the characters are a mix of 19th Century British aristocrats and the crew of Johnny Depp's pirate ship and space battles are fought by 'giving a broadside'. That said, the author shows real talent and as long as you can suspend disbelief it really is a fun escapist 'popcorn-book' read with a likeable main character.

If you could sum up Crimes Against Magic in three words, what would they be?

Intelligent, action-packed, satisfying.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nate, the Protagonist/hero of the story/series is a magical Jack Reacher/James Bond (the book versions, not the cartoonish movie versions). A man's man, a good man with zero tolerance for evil deeds and evil men.

What about James Langton’s performance did you like?

Voice actor James Langton performs brilliantly. He has the vocal range and talent needed to give each character their own distinctive voice and vocal personality, and because he is the voice of the first 5 books there is a consistency of voices, vocal personalities, and pronunciation that makes the story easy to follow from book to book.

Any additional comments?

I'm not normally a huge fan of fantasy or urban fantasy novels but this series is truly is exceptional. Rather than building a world of arcane and stilted language or creating a feeling of awkwardness or unfathomable weirdness, and then rely on bumbling as a plot device, the author wisely chose to respect the readers’ intelligence. First, he created a very likable, intelligent, and easy to relate to protagonist/hero. Over the course of the book and the course of the series the author fully develops the lead character (and others) and that ongoing character development is a big part of the story(s). I won’t say more about this because I do not want to spoil the story(s).

As I said, something that’s very important to me as a reader is respect for the reader’s intelligence by providing intelligent protagonists and antagonists who actually use their brains and almost never make stupid, bumbling mistakes. Too many authors rely on the stupidity of protagonists to get themselves into situations that require a whole book to escape. This author also respects the readers’ intelligence by keeping plot devices such as magic and magical beings logical and consistent. The author succeeds here in that where magic and magical beings are used in the plot, and they are key to the plot(s), they are always subject to well laid out and easily understandable magical laws of nature.

Another thing that is important to me as a reader is complete stories. In my opinion ending a book with a cliffhanger is an amateurish and insulting way of forcing the reader to keep buying books. Author Steve McHugh takes a far superior approach with the Hellequin series in that each book is its own separate story with its own conclusion. Each installment then builds on previous stories and together build toward an overall series plot that leaves you wanting more without ever feeling cheated or left hanging. As of today I’m up to book six in the series and will continue buying and reading them as long as the author keeps writing them.

I have mixed feelings about this book. The only character that I found relatable is the main protagonist. Between the stilted dialogue, horrible personalites, and heavy handed SJW messages it's not a fun read.

I found the story interesting if completely implausible. But I'll probably read the sequel.

The voice actor was the saving grace. He brought life to an implausible story.

This book was a pleasant surprise. The author did an outstanding job of creating interesting and fully fleshed out protagonists, and placed them into a well thought out conflict. The performance was well done but not acted out, and refreshingly free of mispronounced words.

What did you love best about Adios, America?

I liked the hard hitting non-PC presentation and Ann Coulter's thorough research. Say what you like about her politics, Ann does her homework before putting pen to paper. Her research is thorough and accurate and contains much that has been hidden from the public.

What three words best describe Ann Coulter’s performance?

Ann starts out sounding like she'd swallowed a handful of Valium and chased it with three fingers of whiskey. Sort of like she was droning on and about to nod off, but about halfway through the book she seemed to wake up and slowly became the entertaining and impassioned speaker that we all know.

Would you try another book from the authors and/or J. C. Hayes?

I did buy the sequel, but it was too awful to finish, so no I will not buy anymore from this team.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I'd make it a bit less contrived sounding.

How could the performance have been better?

Make it a performance instead of just a mechanical reading.

Could you see Atlantis being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I could see it as a cheap Saturday night SyFy channel movie of the week populated by one of their regular schlock actors. The story makes as much logical sense as one of their low budget creations and has enough action and room for low budget special effects to pull in bored viewers.
