Historia
Somewhere under the freezing Atlantic, a Soviet sub commander has just made a fateful decision. The Red October is heading west. The Americans want her. The Russians want her back. The chase for the highly advanced nuclear submarine is on - and there’s only one man who can find her... Brilliant CIA analyst Jack Ryan has little interest in fieldwork, but when covert photographs of Red October land on his desk, Ryan soon finds himself in the middle of a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek played by two world powers - a game that could end in all-out war.

flashes of greatness that tested my patience
Revisado: 11-11-24
the 20 minute "wrap up" chapter that follows the outstanding climax is a microcosm of my problem with this book. Clancy's world class story is nearly lost in a tedium of details, an exasperatingly long list of locales and an over abundance of incosequential characters that are impossible to keep track of. However, if you can put up with all that, there are some outstanding sequences and strong bouts of solid story telling. an abridged edition would be my pick.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

a masterpiece, even for the average reader/listen
Revisado: 11-12-23
a wonderful mingling of art and entertainment. Even when the story slows between moments of intrigue and suspense, the prose carries you on joyfully, And when the two come together, it's pure magic.

Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

A huge let down. Shockingly painful to endure
Revisado: 11-12-23
i endured 13 hours of this travesty so that you don't have to endure the whole 21 hours. I chose this book for a 28 hour road trip based on positive ratings and the book making a list of great historical fictions. After the first hour, my wife and i stopped the book in complete frustration and we're about to throw in the towel but did some research. one review said it was tough sledding at first but worth the pain. we stuck it out for another 12 hours. I believe there's actually a good story hidden away somewhere between the hours of droning narrative about overly detailed carvings on doors, long and arduous paragraphs of untranslated Italian, ramblings by characters with speaking disorders and pages upon pages of the most tedious and esoteric pontifications on religion and philosophy.... but we couldn't endure another single earful to find out.

a well paced story with a great historical facet. Very enjoyable and a good length. This book made me a Ken Follet fan and sent me searching for more of his excellent work.

A solid effort
Revisado: 11-12-23
A solid piece of writing and an entertaining story that gets better as it goes. i believe this is the author's first published novel and he really finds his stride as the story builds.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

as good as the hype
Revisado: 11-12-23
This is a beautifully written and masterfully performed novel. I dare say the prose is even better than the story. Listening is a pure delight. Suspense, surprise and wholly enveloping.

Historia
Some places seem too beautiful to be touched by horror. Summit Lake, nestled in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, is that kind of place. But two weeks ago, Becca Eckersley, a first-year law student and daughter of a powerful attorney, was brutally murdered there. Now the town is reeling with grief, and the police are baffled.

Dreadful in every way
Revisado: 06-04-23
i was shocked at learning this was written by a successful author. Seems like a 14 year old wrote this book (no offense intended to 14 year olds). virtually no redeeming qualities. basic prose, uninspired story, flat characters, no suspense past the first few chapters. don't waste your time.
