Spectacular Narrator
Revisado: 08-02-24
The voices the narrator created for the characters were so good - this was an epic listen.
It’s another marvelous Elizabeth Bear book. She is a world builder on par with Frank Herbert.

Most beautiful narration
Revisado: 02-26-24
This was the most beautifully read book I’ve ever listened to. Meryl Streep’s voice and performance are second to none. I have listened to a LOT of books and I don’t think it would have mattered what Ms. Streep read, it would have been marvelous but the care she put into this one was remarkable. It was a nice story but the narration really put it over the top.
Listen to it. You won’t be sorry.

What an excellent book this is. And the narrator is sublime. They did such great voices! Added immeasurably to this already wonderful book.
Highly recommend if you love sci-fi that scratches your itch for alien anthropology and NEW ideas. I loved it.

Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to think something isn't quite right. Even the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis, fails to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. Very interesting book, with an anthropomorphizing bent that reminded me a little of The Overstory for some reason. Aura, I suppose.
I found this book quite satisfying. I don't really like zombie apocalypse stories but this one was so different I enjoyed it.

Best thing I've heard in ages
Revisado: 11-19-19
Did you like the Dune books? That series is my all time favorite. This reminds me of them, with the political intrigue and insightful characters. Not as involved (really, what is?) but a very worthwhile listen. The narrator was wonderful, and the book was very well written - a pleasure to listen to. This is the best thing I've heard in ages.

Ready for Book 2 ASAP
Revisado: 12-21-17
What made the experience of listening to Red Sister the most enjoyable?
I really enjoyed this book. It was a good and interesting premise, a good set of adventures with some moral underpinnings, likable characters and the plot was different.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Dark little Nona was interesting, and her persona grew and built toward the climax in the last chapter.
Have you listened to any of Heather O'Neil’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I enjoyed Heather O'Neill's characterizations. Her reading style is pleasant and sympathetic.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I normally only listen during my commute, and I had to listen to this book many other times before it was finished.

Loved this book so much
Revisado: 09-21-17
What made the experience of listening to After On the most enjoyable?
The author has apparently spent some quality time in the Valley and SoMa. Or the Hose? Maybe the Trans Mission area? :) The narrators were all really great, especially Felicia Day, but she could read the phone book and sound entertaining.
What other book might you compare After On to and why?
Something about the tone and pace reminded me of A Confederacy Of Dunces, at least in the first half. No story resemblance at all, but ... something.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The deft narrations brought the characters to life. The readers and the characters were really good.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and I was sorry to finish it.
Any additional comments?
Rob Reid exposed some of the rampant misogyny in Silicon Valley with a deft hand -
From a (slightly paraphrased) conversation with some of the principals in a large company: "Hey, we should get the senior women to weigh in on this!" "We can't, she's on vacation this week."

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Not so great
Revisado: 10-01-15
What would have made Fear the Sky better?
Better fight scenes, not giving the aliens completely human emotions, definitely using more imagination. This was your basic lame-ish spy story, except aliens were substituted for the spies. Really not good, and I am not very picky. The writing was mediocre at best.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Make Me by Lee Child.
What didn’t you like about R.C. Bray’s performance?
Very monotone delivery, was like listening to an old Dragnet performance. Ug. The monotone delivery made the scenes even less original than they were.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fear the Sky?
I would have fixed the fight scenes. They were all terrible - slow and stale. I think the author kept getting confused by who was human and who was not, probably because the entire plot seemed to be based on some old spy novel.

Historia
The first book in C.J.Cherryh's eponymous series, Foreigner begins an epic tale of the survivors of a lost spacecraft who crash-land on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race. From its beginnings as a human-alien story of first contact, the Foreigner series has become a true science fiction odyssey, following a civilization from the age of steam through early space flight to confrontations with other alien species in distant sectors of space. It is the masterwork of a truly remarkable author.

180+ hours! I am reviewing All The Books
Revisado: 09-03-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I have recommended this series and will again. I am on book # 11 out of 15.
I get aggravated with the author at the beginning of each book and then she ropes me in and I HAVE to get the next one. C.J. Cherryh is a fabulous story teller, and the narrator is a marvel. Great voices for the characters. He's as amazing as the stories.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Probably the Dowager and her great grandson, Cajeiri. I loved hearing Cajeiri learn how to think and reason politically. It was a wonderful example of how people maneuver through the minefields of politics. I've always HATED politics, and now I'm rethinking that. I'm not kidding.
Which character – as performed by Daniel Thomas May – was your favorite?
All of them. Especially the Dowager.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Atevi ... they are hardwired to handle emotions very differently than humans. Can the PeaceMaker adjust to the strange ways and bring the alien races together?
Any additional comments?
C.J. Cherryh writes the most engaging action sequences of anyone I've ever read. And she does it consistently. Very impressive. The only series I have ever enjoyed more was Dune.
And possibly the Tales Of The Otori series by Lian Hearn.
