Historia
The town psychiatrist has decided to switch everybody in Pine Cove, California, from their normal antidepressants to placebos, so naturally - well, to be accurate, artificially - business is booming at the local blues bar. Trouble is, those lonely slide-guitar notes have also attracted a colossal sea beast named Steve with, shall we say, a thing for explosive oil tanker trucks.

Sex, drugs, neuroses, and the Blues.
Revisado: 04-27-25
Chris Moore returns to Pine Cove to unfurl another tapestry about the fantastic intruding on the small California coastal town. A big cast of characters have their lives flipped about with the arrival of an ancient sea beast, looking for food, sex, and revenge. A funny farce ensues with the cast running about town, interweaving their eccentric lives.
A few of the characters from his previous Pine Cove book have returned. My favorite is Howard Phillips, (patterned on HP Lovecraft) the owner of a diner. He’s barely in the book, but I enjoy his presence here.

Typical fun
Revisado: 04-21-25
I enjoy Kinsella’s books, but after reading a few of them, I feel her lead characters are practically interchangeable. They’re all attractive young single females, predisposed to being kind, vulnerable, and a bit goofy. They all have difficulties in their careers and romantic relationships.
Fate, often with an assist from themselves, will drop them into a set of circumstances that will tumble comically out of control. And that’s why I enjoy Kinsella’s books; her deft creations of daffy situations and her protagonist’s responses.
In “Secret”, Emma, after several failed careers, is still grappling with her career. She’s mostly driven by wanting to impress her parents and surpass her conniving stepsister. Emma’s been dishonest with herself and others, but during a bout of severe turbulence on a plane, she spills a lifetime of secrets to a handsome stranger seated next to her. The stranger turns out to be the owner of the company she works for. His involvement with Emma triggers a falling of facades and a forced reevaluation of her self.

Short sharp stabs will make you cringe and laugh. Warning: book is not unabridged.
Revisado: 04-18-25
Another collection of essays riddled with dry acerbic funny observations. Casually flippant anecdotes about himself, his family, and a multitude of personal encounters. A large chunk of the book is about his time living in France.
"Unabridged?" I don't think the audiobook's publisher knows what that word means. It's edited as follows:

The Coming of the Mist and That Which It Ushered
Revisado: 09-27-24
During an 18th century ocean voyage, strange shadows rise from the sea and board the ship. The crew confront an unknown force that invades, stalks, and attacks them at night - malevolent “ghosts" from another dimension.
Hodgson employs brisk straightforward storytelling with little introspection and sparse descriptions. I could have used a little more lyricism.
His use of archaic seafaring jargon lends authenticity, but also some difficulty comprehending. Like the novels of C.S. Forester and Patrick O'Brian, I need an illustrated glossary to fully follow them.

Historia
Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life; indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence. The novel was a succès de scandale, and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895. It has lost none of its power to fascinate and disturb.

Narcissists have little use for mirrors. Mirrors only reflect their own opinion of themselves not reality.
Revisado: 09-21-24
The story, specifically it’s titular character, is well-known, but simply put, a young man’s portrait shows the ravages of time and depravity while the young man himself stays young and unblemished by both.
The book explores the topics of narcissism, corruption, morality, and culture among the wealthy elite of Victorian London.
I enjoyed this book very much though it felt a little like a parody. The affected dialogue, skewering quips, skewed ideologies, and passionate outbursts, all typically voiced while sipping cocktails, smoking cigarettes, or flinging themselves onto divans, sofas, chairs, etc. However, I was intrigued by the story and Wilde’s descriptions, though a bit flowery.
Lord Henry Wotton is especially egregious in his self-important pronouncements and epigrams that often come across as more pretentious than perceptive.

Hoary Hawthorne not bad
Revisado: 09-14-24
This large collection of short stories (26) is thick with allegory, and implied or explicit supernatural elements. They were mostly enjoyable, though Hawthorne’s cynicism and philosophizing made it a grind at times. Also, reading them one right after the other reveals many of them have a similar plot structure that amounts to a moralizing litany of symbols, and historic or fictional figures. I liked his phrasing, imagination, and appreciation of nature.

Welcome to the hilarious, strange, elegiac, outrageous world of David Sedaris. “Unabridged Selections” Cute. Only half the stories from the book.
Revisado: 04-13-24
Eight of the seventeen originally published stories are in this Audible edition. Of what is here: A collection of grimly humorous short stories told in first person. Each started in one place and wanders along twisting paths to strange and unexpected areas. The tales are a mixture of awkward distressing and hilarious, all conveyed in a very matter-of-fact tone like someone relating a horrific hysterical situation for the hundredth time.

Historia
The War of the Rebellion is over, and the members of the American Gun Club, bored with inactivity, look around for a new project. At last they have it: "We will build the greatest projectile the world has ever seen and make the moon our 38th state!" When From the Earth to the Moon was published in 1865, it was regarded as pure fantasy. Who could imagine a rocket that would carry men and animals through space?

More humor, intentional and accidental in this tale of prep and planning humanity’s first space voyage.
Revisado: 12-31-23
An early example of Science Fiction and, to a lesser degree, a social satire. Limited by available scientific data, Verne’s theories of surmounting the task of traveling to the Moon vary from remarkably accurate to ridiculous. Entertaining, if a bit dry at times. It would takes us another century to catch up to Verne’s speculation.

For “Around the Moon” only
Revisado: 12-31-23
This romanticized tale of space travel is the sequel to Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon.
Almost the entire novel is the experiences and dialogue of three men inside a large shell hurtling toward the Moon. It’s chiefly lengthy expositions and speculations derived from 150-year-old scientific postulation. Fantastic ideas bogged down with dreary rationalizations.
The narrator is OK, but I didn’t like his French accent.
So far, my least favorite Verne novel. Verne was a visionary, an innovator, but this flight of the fantastic left me weary.
