I’m Paige Harper, and I clean up supernatural messes. But my personal life is something I can’t seem to straighten out. I accidentally married a fae, and even though we've been divorced for years, Jax still manages to land me in hot water. Like, putting my house on the table at a high stakes poker game type of hot.

Prejudiced Heroine Ruins Book
Revisado: 03-12-21
While the premise is interesting & the narrator does a good job with a highly flawed story I cannot recommend this book. The heroine's unrelenting prejudice against a whole class of people (Supes) is incredibly off putting. Seriously if I heard "that's supes for you" when faced with an individual doing a bad thing one more time I was going to scream. It's shocking to me that a book where the heroine -- even when presented with evidence to the contrary by individual "supes" -- constantly expresses her hatred & distrust of a subsection of society, and is just plain mean and nasty to some of them because of her prejudices, even got published. I don't care if it's fiction, the echos of her words and actions to real life are beyond distressing - particularly as her words and justifications parallel discriminatory language used by hate groups.
Seriously, skip this one.

Historia
Senior co-administrator of the Norcoast Salmon Research Facility, Dr. Mackenzie Connor was a biologist who studied the spawning habits of salmon. Then, last season, just as she and Dr. Emily Mamani were starting their research, they were interrupted by the arrival of Brymm, the first Dhryn to set foot on Earth. And suddenly everything changed for Mac, Emily, Brymn, the human race, and all the member races of the Interspecies Union. Base was attacked, Em was kidnapped by the mysterious Ro, and Mac and brymn had to flee for their lives to the Dhryn home world.

Love the story - 'hero's' voice not for me
Revisado: 11-04-20
I am a longtime fan of the series, and was excited to listen to the audio version. For the most part the narrator does a very good job keeping voices distinct and accents unique, with the exception of some male voices which sound very very similar - when she tries to make a deep male voice the accents are all the same. Also, not quite sure who made decision on what voice/accent to use for the male protagonist but doesn't work for me. That said I have listened to the first two and will definitely buy the third.

Wanted to like this, annoying characters ruined it
Revisado: 08-20-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I think the print copy, when you can skim the many annoying/repetitive passages where the heroine is just being a b*tch or where the prince is acting like an angst ridden teenager would be a better format. Listening on audio was excruciating.
Would you ever listen to anything by Juliet Marillier again?
Not sure
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators?
I prefer one narrator - but the format of having different narrators worked okay given chapters were told in only one in character's voice (so having a distinct narrator for each voice wasn't as grating as some multi character narrations can be.)
Any additional comments?
I read/listen to a lot of fantasy so this book popped up quite often in my various feeds I decided to give it a try based on the reviews. I really like the initial premise but the personality of the main female character was grating. I think if the author had shown more earlier of why she acted this way (and why Grim acted the way he did) I'd have put up with the story - there's a lot you can forgive a character for when you know the reasons behind why they act the way that they do. I got not quite half way through and then skipped to the end, I just couldn't stand the character any more (so I have no idea if the back story was ever shared!). And don't get me started on Price Oren's lovelorn angst.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

RC BRAY Awesome Narrator
Revisado: 03-05-16
I have the ORIGINAL audible release of The Martian and for the life of me can't understand WHY the powers that be changed the narrator. FFS this version was up for an Audie and is one of the **best** audible books I've ever listened too. All I can say to people who have to buy the okay-but-not-great current version - I'm sorry you missed out on RC Bray's narration, it's really something special.
