The Awakening: A Powerful Display of Symbolism
Revisado: 08-07-19
Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" provides a powerful account of one woman's journey to authenticity and the revelation that you cannot ever truly have it all. Weighing the cost of living a true identity, Chopin displays masterful craft in applying symbolism that, much like the ocean, ebbs and flows. The sea is a main character in the text, its immeasurable depths and smallest shallows provide the contrasts felt by the main character as she combats opposing forces that pull and push her in multiple directions. The story, published in 1899, addresses many modern motifs, including gender roles, gender bias, and gender identity shaped by societal norms. The text is written in a neo-contemporary fashion and although there are undertones of classicalism, the narration of Philippe Duquenoy makes for a comprehensible approach to the language dense sections. A stunning and wonderful work!

Riveting
Revisado: 07-18-19
As a subject of much literary debate, the evil that lurks on the pages of the book signify a conflicting challenge for the reader. The danger is nebulous throughout, allowing the reader to interpret their own meaning of the events in the story. It is like a "choose your own adventure" that leaves you riddled with goosebumps and questioning deeply the shadows seen from the corner of your eye. Emma Thompson's reading is expressly captivating and acted in such a way as to paint vividly the setting and language of the piece.
