Historia
A darkly satirical novel of love, revenge, and 1950s haute couture - now a major motion picture starring Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth, and Hugo Weaving. After 20 years spent mastering the art of dressmaking at couture houses in Paris, Tilly Dunnage returns to the small Australian town she was banished from as a child. She plans only to check on her ailing mother and leave. But Tilly decides to stay, and though she is still an outcast, her lush, exquisite dresses prove irresistible to the prim women of Dungatar.

Slightly interesting story. This lost my interest throughout. I did find the geographical setting to be interesting.

An exceptional swimmer, Coralie appears as the Mermaid in her father's "museum", alongside performers like the Wolfman, the Butterfly Girl, and a 100-year-old turtle. One night Coralie stumbles upon a striking young man photographing moonlit trees in the woods off the Hudson River.

Beautiful prose.
Revisado: 02-15-17
Beautiful prose. The fantasy nature of the story and characters became tedious for me. I preferred Water for Elephants much more.

Very cliche topic.
Revisado: 01-17-17
This is such an old topic that has been written about for decades since Tom Sawyer, Uncle Tom's Cabin. No new material. I wonder if the author really believes that she is more aware of racism and less racist as a result of writing this book. If so, I would ask her what kind of integrated neighborhood she lives in and how integrated are the schools she placed her children in. How integrated is her work space?

Historia
In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

The story is not autobiographical.
Revisado: 01-17-17
I was under the impression that this was an autobiographical story about the author. Once I researched and found out otherwise, the stilted story was easier to accept. The story in the beginning was informative about the Greco-Turkish war. As the story progressed, it became entertaining and humorous.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Fascinating Story about Working Poor
Revisado: 12-11-16
This biography was a fascinating story about growing up in a white, working poor, Scots - Irish family in the Rust Belt of the US. The author told great stories about his family and wove the culture and politics around each story in a seemless and fascinating manner. I highly recommend reading/listening to this book. It provides the reader an opportunity to challenge old paradigms about the poor in America. Though this is set in the Rust Belt, I see this applying to many geographic areas of the US where we have blue collar working and poor cultures.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Good and believable story about occupied France during WWll. No matter how imperfect love is, in the end, this is all that endures and it is perfect in its imperfection.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

I would have cut short the first 2 time travel episodes in this book; thus saving a meandering story. The extreme detail makes this story ready for script writing.

Historia
Meg Mabry has spent her life with her back turned to her legendary family legacy. In the 1890s her great-grandmother Hannah Bass composed starkly revealing diaries of her life on the southwestern frontier, first as a Harvey Girl at the glamorous Montezuma Resort in New Mexico and later as the wife of brilliant, and often-absent, railway engineer Eliott Bass.
