Historia
The Crusades is an authoritative, accessible single-volume history of the brutal struggle for the Holy Land in the Middle Ages. Thomas Asbridge - a renowned historian who writes with "maximum vividness" (Joan Acocella, The New Yorker) - covers the years 1095 to 1291 in this big, ambitious, listenable account of one of the most fascinating periods in history.

Well written revisionism
Revisado: 04-11-25
I hope that his book on William Marshal is more even handed. This was well written and paced, and none of it was untrue. But the way the author frames things is insulting to Islam, Saladin, and the true knights of the cross.

Historia
The first Plantagenet king inherited a blood-soaked kingdom from the Normans and transformed it into an empire stretched at its peak from Scotland to Jerusalem. In this epic history, Dan Jones vividly resurrects this fierce and seductive royal dynasty and its mythic world. We meet the captivating Eleanor of Aquitaine, twice queen and the most famous woman in Christendom; her son, Richard the Lionheart, who fought Saladin in the Third Crusade; and King John, a tyrant who was forced to sign Magna Carta, which formed the basis of our own Bill of Rights.

Too broad for one book, but Dan Jones is brilliant!
Revisado: 02-25-25
We just need more information about relevant players in each sort of “episode” of each Plantagenet king. The writing and research are great, but I wouldn’t recommend this book for those unfamiliar with the Plantagenets. Marvelous width, but lacking depth. Good scholarship by Dan Jones per usual, and entertaining!

Historia
A charismatic leader, a warrior whose prowess in battle earned him the epithet Whiteblade, an exiled prince who returned to claim his birthright, the inspiration for Tolkein's Aragorn: Oswald of Northumbria was the first great English monarch, yet today this legendary figure is all but forgotten. In this panoramic portrait of Dark Age Britain, archaeologist and biographer Max Adams returns the king in the North to his rightful place in history.

Not like First Kingdom! This book is not about Oswald.
Revisado: 02-07-25
I was hyped up since he’s described as a Beowulf and Aragorn inspiration. But he’s hardly mentioned! The whole book is about church politics over anything else, there is no detail about any secular happening of the time, and no mention of the Whiteblade or Blessed Arm monikers getting earned. Everything in here was interesting for someone I’m sure, and this book is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of British Christianity and the Irish church (well researched), but it’s not what it claims to be.

It was on the Silk Roads that East and West first encountered each other through trade and conquest, leading to the spread of ideas, cultures, and religions. From the rise and fall of empires to the spread of Buddhism and the advent of Christianity and Islam, right up to the great wars of the 20th century - this book shows how the fate of the West has always been inextricably linked to the East.

Not about the Silk Road!
Revisado: 11-01-24
Misleading! This is just a framing device for a very general world history. A few new facts but not what I was advertised.

Historia
Pax Romana examines how the Romans came to control so much of the world and asks whether traditionally favorable images of the Roman peace are true. Goldsworthy vividly recounts the rebellions of the conquered and examines why they broke out, why most failed, and how they became exceedingly rare. He reveals that hostility was just one reaction to the arrival of Rome and that from the outset, conquered peoples collaborated, formed alliances, and joined invaders, causing resistance movements to fade away.

Varied and Vast
Revisado: 10-24-24
This engaging prose analysis of the status quo of the Pax Romana also serves as a robust cross section of many, many aspects of Roman life, both in peace and war. Juxtaposing the Principate of the Roman Peace with contemporary states and nations, as well as with our own modern Pax Americana, Adrian delivers another volume, Goldsworthy in standard (get it?). Pax Romana is fast, immersive, and essential, whether you are the aspiring historian, amateur savant, or casual plebeian.

Our capital city has always been a thriving and colorful place, full of diverse and determined individuals developing trade and finance, exchanging gossip and doing business. Abandoned by the Romans, rebuilt by the Saxons, occupied by the Vikings and reconstructed by the Normans, London would become the largest trade and financial center, dominating the world in later centuries. London has always been a brilliant, vibrant, and eclectic place.

While much of the information is dispensed through historical anecdotes rather than one fact after another, this title should be lauded for analyzing a wide array of elements of daily medieval life, then returning to these elements in later ages.
