Historia
We speak English today because the Anglo-Saxons took over most of post-Roman Britain. How did that happen? There is little evidence: not much archaeology, and even less written history. There is, however, a huge amount of speculation. King Arthur's Wars brings an entirely new approach to the subject - the answers are out there, in the British countryside, waiting to be found. Months of field work and map study allow us to understand, for the first time, how the Anglo-Saxons conquered England, county by county and decade by decade.

Not what I expected but still interesting
Revisado: 01-12-24
I expected the book to be more on the battles & wars of the time period than it was. This is pretty heavy on the geography of the battle sites and less so on the battles themselves but it was still interesting and I enjoyed it anyway.

Historia
In the enormous literature of the Second World War, there are surprisingly few accounts of fighting in the southwest Pacific, fewer still by common infantrymen. This memoir, written with a simple and direct honesty that is rare indeed, follows a foot soldier’s career from basic training to mustering out. It takes the listener into the jungles and caves of New Guinea and the Philippines during the long campaign to win the war against Japan.

Well written account of a forgotten WWII campaign

I wanted to listen to this book because my Great Grandpa was in the same regiment as the author and wanted to know more about his time in the war. It turned out to be very well written and read by a very engaging narrator. It's an interesting account of a seriously underreported theater of the war.

Perfection! Stephen Fry IS Sherlock Holmes!
Revisado: 08-10-20
This is the best read audiobook I've listened to yet, almost like sitting in Holmes' living room listening first hand. As he says in his intros, Mr. Fry is a huge fan of the series and it shows in his readings. He put great effort and care into getting the feeling just right and his ability to instantly switch between accents makes for easy recognition of which character is speaking. I hope he reads the other stories when they become available.

Somewhere under the freezing Atlantic, a Soviet sub commander has just made a fateful decision. The Red October is heading west. The Americans want her. The Russians want her back. The chase for the highly advanced nuclear submarine is on - and there’s only one man who can find her... Brilliant CIA analyst Jack Ryan has little interest in fieldwork, but when covert photographs of Red October land on his desk, Ryan soon finds himself in the middle of a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek played by two world powers - a game that could end in all-out war.

An absolute modern classic

Loved the movie since I was a kid, and the book, unsurprisingly, is even better. The storyline is much more complex and involved. The narration is very good, understandable, suspenseful, and the ability to instantly change accents really helps stay 'in the moment'

Fun old folk tales from where I grew up
Revisado: 04-17-20
I've had this book for nearly 25 years and was happy to replace my nearly worn out, out of print copy with a digital one, unfortunately the digital is abridged. The stories are a lot of fun to hear and the narration is really good, but the audio quality isn't the best; sounds like an older recording.
