Historia
R. D. Blackmore’s enduring masterpiece Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor is renowned for its beautifully descriptive writing, the cleverly woven plot, and the powerfully drawn portrait of true love. Set in Devon in the late 17th century, it is an enduring masterpiece. First published in 1869, the novel revolves around the story of Devonshire farmer, John Ridd, his family, friends, and community. John tells the story in the first person beginning when he is just a boy and his father is murdered by the Doones.

Favorite book as a teen
Revisado: 01-18-22
This has long been my favorite book, since it spoke so well to my teen boy brain. Now, many years later, I have been married to my own Lorna Doone—a woman I met when she was young and whom I never considered until one day . . .
This is such a sweet tale where honesty, chivalry, and honor are exalted along with humility. Loved it again!

Tyler Merritt's video "Before You Call the Cops" has been viewed millions of times. He's appeared on Jimmy Kimmel and Sports Illustrated and has been profiled in the New York Times. The viral video's main point - the more you know someone, the more empathy, understanding, and compassion you have for that person - is the springboard for this book. By sharing his highs and exposing his lows, Tyler welcomes us into his world in order to help bridge the divides that seem to grow wider every day.

Real, raw, profound, hilarious, soup-affirming
Revisado: 09-23-21
What a great book. Such a fantastic story and well told. Love hearing it in Tyler’s voice (and all the little extras he adds for the audio version).
So many relatable scenes in his life story, even for a white guy who grew up under far different circumstances. Tyler’s story pulls you in and makes you not just have empathy for him but a real strong sense of comradeship and kinship with him. He’s a dude you want to meet. And as you’re examining his life, it makes you examine yours in the best of ways.
Highly highly recommended.

Scott Brick brings the mood to a great story
Revisado: 11-18-18
I read “Washington’s Spies” here on Audible, so I was impressed with the research Meltzer did to bring the Culper Ring to life in this story.
Smart writing full of good one-liners, intrigue, action, strong characters you can get behind, and a compelling storyline.

Historia
San Francisco is about to receive the biggest delivery of MDMA to hit the West Coast in years. Raymond Gaspar, just out of prison, is sent to the city to check in on the increasingly erratic dealer expected to take care of distribution. In Miami, the man responsible for getting the drugs across the Pacific has just met the girl of his dreams - a woman who can't seem to keep her story straight. And thousands of miles away in Bangkok, someone farther up the supply chain is about to make a phone call that will put all their lives at risk.

Difficult to follow story with strange lilting narration.
Revisado: 11-02-18
I get that a story may be told from various perspectives, but this one was just odd. It begins with the point of view of a like-able enough guy sent to straighten out a drug deal for his buddy in prison. Because of the strange way in which that first section of the book ends, the listener is less apt to buy into the next character’s point of view.
The constant addition of new somewhat important characters and the backstory needed on main characters to whose point of view we then switch muddies up the story enough to make it far less enjoyable and that much more confusing.
I thought at first that the narrator was reading in a funky, sing-song lilting way with strange upticks and emphases as part of the first character’s style and mood. Nope. Annoying through the whole book.
Unfortunately, this book soured me on both author and narrator.

Historia
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

Fascinating, well-researched and fairly believable novel, but super-weird voice sounds like a fake accent halfway between New Mexico and Bostonian.

Historia
On a sunny May morning in 1998 in Cortez, Colorado, three desperados in a stolen truck opened fire on the town cop, shooting him 20 times; then they blasted their way past dozens of police cars and disappeared into 10,000 square miles of the harshest wilderness terrain on the North American continent. Self-trained survivalists, the outlaws eluded the most sophisticated law enforcement technology on the planet and a pursuit force that represented more than 75 local, state, and federal police agencies with dozens of SWAT teams, U.S. Army Special Forces....

Well-researched and true to life account
Revisado: 03-25-18
Without sensationalizing or over-dramatizing this true story of a shooting and manhunt in the modern American West, Dan Schultz gives a detailed and very gripping account. This will keep your attention and leave you wanting to go down and start asking questions . . . for many different reasons.
A fascinating story that is told with enough flow and pacing to keep the listener engaged while providing enough background info to make it wholly believable. A no-nonsense reading by Arthur Murray adds grit and believability to this dynamic retelling of a crime and its aftermath.
Worth your time, especially if you like true crime stories, Wild West or survivalist narratives, or just like to take a peek behind the scenes of a crime docu-drama in action.

With his trademark mirth and boundless charisma, actor Nick Offerman brought the loveable shenanigans of Twain's adolescent hero to life in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Now, in yet another virtuosic performance, the actor proves that despite being separated by a span of over a century, his connection to the author and his work is undeniable and that theirs is a timeless collaboration that should not be missed.

Delightful witty writing set in 6th century
Revisado: 03-21-18
If you’re new to Twain like me (not having read much if anything of his for years), you’ll love his quirky witticisms and round about way of exposing the reader to a humorous part of the tale he’s telling. He assumes the reader is smart and has a sense of humor as well, which makes you feel like you’re in on the joke rather than being told about it afterward.
The plot lis exactly as the title states and is this man’s own account of being part of King Arthur’s royal court as he recounts it to Mark Twain.
Get it for the classic that it is and enjoy it for the laughs.

Historia
In his final novel - which he considered his most important - Aldous Huxley transports us to the remote Pacific island of Pala, where an ideal society has flourished for 120 years. Inevitably, this island of bliss attracts the envy and enmity of the surrounding world. A conspiracy is underway to take over Pala, and events are set in motion when an agent of the conspirators, a newspaperman named Faranby, is shipwrecked there. What Faranby doesn't expect is how his time with the people of Pala will revolutionize all his values and - to his amazement - give him hope.

Interesting view of “paradise”
Revisado: 01-29-18
Not by any means an adventure or action story, this mid-century parable of sorts is heavy on dialogue and utopian optimism mixed with shots at established modern and traditional religious and societal values.
