Beautiful

I love this story so much. Holmberg pretty much never disappoints but this one was especially beautiful.

The ancient land of Eirinn is mired in war. Ciara, princess of Mide, has never known a time when Eirinn's kingdoms were not battling for power or Northmen were not plundering their shores. The people of Mide have always been safe because of Ciara's unearthly ability to control her enemies' minds and actions. But lately a mysterious crow has been appearing to Ciara, whispering warnings of an even darker threat. Although her clansmen dismiss her visions as pagan nonsense, Ciara fears this coming evil will destroy not just Eirinn but the entire world.

Increase the audio speed
Revisado: 04-02-21
This is honestly such an enjoyable book! I was interested from start to finish. However, the narrator is much too slow for my liking so I increased the audio speed and it was perfect after that.

Historia
Lilac's birthright makes her the Queen of Renovia, and a forced marriage made her the Queen of Montrice. But being a ruler does not mean making the rules. For Lilac, taking the throne means giving up the opportunity to be with love of her life, the kingdom's assassin, Caledon Holt. Worse, Cal is forced to leave the castle when a horrific set of magical attacks threatens Lilac's sovereignty. Now Cal and Lilac will have to battle dark forces separately, even though being together is the only thing that's ever saved them.

Bothersome beginning-Updated, It's bad
Revisado: 03-05-21
The beginning chapters are frustrating. Only about a year has passed since the point where the last book left off but Lilac keeps making it sound like years have passed. She is jealous of a "younger" girl (like she's so ancient?) and she talks about how she isn't in her prime anymore. WHAT?! She continuously makes it sound like 20years have passed with all her complaining.
Maybe I'm overreacting but it's so annoying that I'm having trouble getting into this one.
I'm only 7chapters in so I will update my rating/review when I finish.
UPDATE:
Weeks later and I can't bring myself to come back to this book so I'm going to try to get a refund for it. I enjoy other books by this author, this one was just a big miss for me.

Great story and great narrator.
Revisado: 07-20-20
Gildart Jackson is the first narrator I've found whose American accent didn't leave me wanting to rip my ears off. Yes, that's dramatic but holy hell, some narrators think we sound atrocious.
I like the story and it only seemed a bit too slow on occasion...I found the writing to be reminiscent of Georgette Heyer and she is one of my favorite authors so I have few complaints. This was a really great book.

Drawn out plot
Revisado: 05-21-20
Like pretty much all of the books in the series, the plot is far too drawn out. Sweet stories but they really should not be more than a few hours long...this plot in particular was a bit boring to be drawn out so long. Would love abridged versions to be available.

Awkward Narrator choice
Revisado: 04-29-20
The child that narrates this book is good and very fitting for the early chapters, where Ella is young. However, When you have a child voicing the later chapters it becomes awkward... disconcerting even. The story loses some impact. This book is all about Ella's growth and maturation over the span of years. I mean, it ends with her getting married...just weird to hear such a young voice trying to convey the more mature themes of the later chapters.
I'm giving the audiobook 4stars, and still giving the story section 5stars, because this is a classic and my favorite childhood book. This was the book that made me love reading.
And again, the narrator is good! I would just prefer for the voice to mature according to theme. Would love if they had a dual narration.

Performance Makes the Story Work
Revisado: 04-14-19
This story is pretty good. Some sections seem to drag on while others feel rushed and the main character's thoughts become very contradictory at times. All that aside, I still gave it 5stars because the performer reading this book is AMAZING. Even with inconsistencies, I found myself believing the storyteller.
