Some of the best writing I've ever read
Revisado: 03-23-25
I was blown away by the writing in this book. The story is entertaining and felt like it kept building and building, and though I saw the end coming I'd still say it was a nice twist and for most of the book I had zero idea who did it or what happened. The narrator does an excellent job of telling the story and kept me engaged the whole book. Though others described this story as dark, I wouldn't consider it that. More just sad. I will definitely be following Hayley Scrivenor and reading all her books, She could make a book about going to the grocery store entertaining.

Just plain terrible, don't waste your money
Revisado: 11-13-24
I'm mad at myself for actually finishing this book. Re-sort the reviews by "Most Recent" and you'll get the true reviews of this book. I'm honestly not sure how it has 4.5 stars, it must be bots leaving 5 start reviews, there's no way an actual person would think this is good.
This book is about "psychopaths" yet the author seems to have gotten all her information on psychopaths from a Cosmo article. The main character is a self diagnosed psychopath and annoyingly continues to refer to her "dark side", yet she continually has feelings of concern and care for people and other emotions that a psychopath is incapable of. There is little to no character development in the story, the dialogue is terrible and sounds unrealistic, and the author has clearly done no research on actual FBI procedures.
On top of all that, the writing is awful - she uses "fitted" as a verb. I kept listening hoping at least the storyline would end up being decent, but the ending is anticlimactic, unrealistic, and as bad as the rest of the book. Do not waste your time or money, this book is the worst I've ever read all the way through.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Hard to follow storyline and lackluster narrator
Revisado: 11-07-24
Unlike some reviews, I didn't hate the narrator as a whole, but his voicing of Gamache really irritated me. It reminded me of Will Ferrell's SNL character, Harry Caray, slightly slurring like he was drunk or had recently suffered a stroke. When he voiced French names and words his accent was so strong the characters' names sounded the same so I had a hard time keeping straight who was who.
Unlike other Gamache books were I am hooked from first page to last, this one felt like a slog. Like others stated, I had to reread many sections several times. I just think there was too much going on, along with the heavily accented French names. Honestly I'm still confused by some characters.
Of course, a just okay Louise Penny book is still better than most other novels written, so if you're a Gamache fan its still a must read.

Historia
No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her - and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

Great writing, but very little suspense
Revisado: 06-20-24
Excellent writing but I have to admit I picked it as it was described as "suspenseful" and a "crime thriller" and its frankly neither. To me if felt a lot like Standby Me - there is a a back story of something happening but the story isn't really about that, its more about the journey and experiences of the characters. If i were wanting a feel good story about human nature and the love of a father I'd pick this, but for suspense or thrills this is a miss. The story is slow and the ending is anti-climactic.
The narrator however is fantastic (I NEVER would have guessed this is Balki from Perfect Strangers.) He brought this book from a 3 up to a 4 for me, his voice is soothing and has a great story-teller vibe that pulls you right in.

Shortly before midnight, four teenagers broke into the old abandoned psychiatric hospital on Beacon Hill. Only three came out again. The missing girl—Riley Holt—is the seventeen-year-old daughter of the local police chief and she appears to have vanished into thin air. Called from Manhattan to take over the case, Detective Maria Miller and her partner Frankie Conroy uncover the sinister past of the abandoned hospital, which was once the hiding place of the notorious College Kid Killer, who never revealed the burial site of his final victim.

It’s way out there, but just go with it
Revisado: 03-03-24
I’m not sure this would have worked with any other writer or narrator, it is WAY out there. She took the police crime drama and paranormal horror of the first book and threw in a metaphysical/sci-fi bend to it. Oh and some historical fiction just to really spice it up. If someone had told me this story first I probably wouldn’t have read the book, but I’m so glad I did. Maybe it’s because the narrator is so good, or because I just enjoy this writer’s style, but I finished this book in one day. I think this is gonna be one of those love it or hate it books, but personally I hope to see more in this series.

Historia
When Detective Maria Miller walks up creaking stairs into the attic of the old brownstone she senses this isn’t an ordinary crime scene. The brutality of the murder is enough to shock even an experienced detective like Maria. But there’s something else. An unsettling presence seems to lurk in the shadows sending a chill through Maria’s bones, making her desperate to run back down the stairs and never return. The killing is identical to the murder of an actress sixty years before, a crime that tore a family apart and sent shockwaves through New York City.

It’s Halloween, and when an elderly billionaire is discovered dead in the locked study of his stately Highland home, DCI Jack Logan and his team must race the worsening weather to get to the scene of the crime. There, among the victim’s extended family and staff, Jack finds no shortage of suspects. Everyone, it seems, had reason to want the old man dead, and they all have something to hide.

Ten years ago, Marshall profiled a serial killer the press had dubbed the Shadow Man, who killed six young athletes at remote sites in cold blood, and he worked with Northumbria Police to catch the perpetrator. But the Shadow Man kept the burial locations of the final three bodies to himself. Tired of the passivity, Marshall quit profiling and joined the police. Now a detective inspector in Police Scotland’s Borders Major Investigation Team, Marshall is summoned to HMP Frankland in County Durham, a.k.a. the Monster Mansion.

Long and confusing, but Angus King saves it
Revisado: 09-19-23
Started listening to this series for Angus King hoping it'd be a bit like JD Kirk, so maybe my bar is a bit too high. The first book in the series was decent, and of course Angus King is amazing. This book was a bit long, rambling, and confusing. I had to re-listen to certain parts to figure out what was happening, and then by halfway through the book I was just ready for it to be over so I quit doing that. I'm still not completely sure what happened. I already purchased the 3rd book in the series before reading this one, so hope its better than this one.

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Long and tedious
Revisado: 05-13-23
I probably would have enjoyed this if it had only been The Magpie Murders (though even that part was tedious by the end). But the story within a story ruined an otherwise mildly entertaining book. Allen Corduner was an exceptional narrator, Samantha Bond was decent, but in her defense I just didn’t like her part of the book. I would not recommend this book.

Story is all over the place
Revisado: 12-17-22
I enjoyed the writing style and narration, but the story was drawn out and all over the place. Eleven chapters in i still wasn't sure what the main storyline was but I wanted to finish it so listened on 1.3x speed, but honestly wish I'd just given up. So much potential but terribly executed.
