Marvelous storytelling!
Revisado: 09-14-18
This is a gem of a performance. It begins like a fairytale and ends in reality, which is not as harsh as the writer thought it would be. A wonderful journey of important people who happened to be “everyday” people, but noble, nevertheless.

Historia
From the beloved, best-selling author of All over but the Shoutin', a delectable, rollicking food memoir, cookbook, and loving tribute to a region, a vanishing history, a family, and, especially, his mother. In The Best Cook in the World, Rick Bragg finally preserves his heritage by telling the stories that framed his mother's cooking and education, from childhood into old age. Because good food always has a good story.

Real people. Real food.
Revisado: 05-20-18
This may be Rick’s best. I’ve read them all. Before this one, All Over But the Shoutin’ was my favorite.
These extraordinary stories and recipes are about “ordinary” people who did not see themselves as such. Their resourcefulness and fortitude is inspiring and moving. Their humor is laugh out loud funny.
Rick’s performance is masterful. His voice and cadence and accent are a lullaby to my ears. My mama’s people were from Alabama, too, and my mama cooked “plain food,” she called it. It was anything but. Like Rick’s mama, she cooked the best food in the world with little to work with. Thank you, Rick Bragg, for preserving this culture from another time and place that is precious to those who have known it and tasted it.

Magical

This is a wonderful story from a child's perspective, but what really makes it a winner is the narration by Susie Jackson, which is pitch perfect!

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

One of Grisham's best

One of Grisham's best. A great story, truly Southern, with turns right up until the end. The performance is wonderfully true to the accents of Mississippi.
