Historia
In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

One of the best recorded versions ever
Revisado: 04-20-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this version. I gave it five stars, although I dithered because I absolutely did not like his voice of Tom Bombadil. Think Disney’s Goofy and Star Wars’ Jar-Jar Binks, with a little bit of Woody Woodpecker sprinkled in. Simply awful.
Everything else, though, absolutely made up for it. I will definitely listen to this again, but skip his Tom Bombadil chapter. Too bad, because I love Tom Bombadil.

The story is good, and the narrator is absolutely amazing, but poor editing made the story hard to follow.

Randy Rainbow, the man who conquered the internet with a stylish pair of pink glasses, an inexhaustible knowledge of Broadway musicals, and the most gimlet-eyed view of American politics this side of Mark Twain finally tells all in Playing with Myself, a memoir sure to cause more than a few listeners to begin singing one of his greatest hits like “A Spoonful of Clorox” or “Cover Your Freakin’ Face”.

More than just a book
Revisado: 06-20-23
As I listened, I found myself thinking I haven’t listened to Streisand in a while. Several days later, I rewound to get myself back in the story, then realized I only know Carol Burnett’s TV work, not her broadway work, so spent another few days in a YouTube spiral amazed at how incredible she is, then watched her 90 years of love and laughter Netflix special and marveled how Cher still has it, and so on and so on. Listening to the book the second time, I thought I would just be able to listen straight through, but wondered how on earth I missed Randy Rainbow’s interview with Terry Gross, but kept pausing that to listen to the whole Randy Rainbow song, not just the snippet played on Fresh Air.
You get the picture. Playing With Myself is just so full of humor and love and wonderful nuggets of sunshine, it’s more than just a book.

Reader’s Simba voice is even more annoying
Revisado: 04-05-21
This readers Simba voice has always been annoying – more like an aged hillbilly mule, but in this book the reader has inexplicably drawn out the braying even more. Fortunately, he doesn’t feature prominently in this book. The endless dithering about what layers of good and evil are in the twins has gotten old, though. Only reason I am listening to this and the last one is to find out how the story resolves. It feels like the series could’ve ended a while ago, frankly

Jaw-dropping realism – not for the faint of heart
Revisado: 02-22-20
I started listening to this early on a Sunday morning. I was riveted for the entire 10 1/2 hours. There’s so many things to say about this book. It broke my heart to not only hear everything these three women went through, but to also find out it could’ve been stopped, but no one believed them. The letter the youngest wrote to the FBI and other officers brought me to tears.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Rowling is great - would prefer Fry's version
Revisado: 08-14-16
I love Harry Potter, but I wish Americans could order Fry's version of the audiobooks rather than Jim Dale's. I first encountered Jim Dale in another series and absolutely hated the way he voiced girls and women - and two of the three main characters were female. He was so bad, I researched a bit to find out why this fun, promising book (The Emerald Atlas, btw) had such a terrible reader and was very surprised to learn he had won awards for Harry Potter! It took me quite a while to resign myself to get these audiobooks. Rowling never disappoints, but Dale is another thing altogether. He is quite good with most of the voices, but Hermoine's is so terrible, it has shades of sexism. I'm not calling him sexist, but he's just that bad.

Historia
In early 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life plus thirty years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a high school senior in Baltimore, Maryland. Syed has maintained his innocence, and Rabia Chaudry, a family friend, has always believed him. By 2013, after almost all appeals had been exhausted, Rabia contacted Sarah Koenig, a producer at This American Life, in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan’s story. In 2014, Koenig's investigation turned into Serial, a Peabody Award-winning podcast with more than 500 million international listeners.

We all need a friend like Rabia
Revisado: 08-13-16
Before Serial, I assumed, rather naively, that truth played a large part in our justice system. Now, I know that it relies on building credible cases, positioning circumstances so that the case seems credible to the less committed observer. If truth happens to line up with credibility, it's sometimes more a happy coincidence than a focused goal. Rabia, however is committed. Adnan's case should have slipped away, but Rabia has her spotlight fixed on truth and refuses to turn it off, annoying the hell out of people sometime, including friends and family. Others have said that Adnan's situation could happen to any of us; that is true and chilling to think about. More sobering is that few of us have a friend like her to help if it does.
