The Gray Man fights Skynet
Revisado: 03-09-24
This is a fun story that would make for an interesting series, but it has no relation to the Gray Man universe. It seems like Greaney reached the natural end point of the series and wanted to try his hand at a sci-fi thriller. However, he didn’t start afresh and instead attempted to make it work as Gray Man novel.
Ultimately, the plot is pretty entertaining and works as a “what if” near future thriller about a possible Skynet style AI. The issue is that it really has nothing to do with the Gray Man. Court Gentry is barely in the book and none of the ordinary elements of the prior books are present.
It’s a big departure that is just a disappointment. I’d prefer Greaney retire the character and start a new series rather than attempting to re-invent the series after so many successful books.

Awful - misogynist rape fantasy
Revisado: 06-08-23
This is a book that shows up on a lot of Les has a top lit RPG book. It is not a good book. People try to make excuses and say that it is simply gory or graphic. It is not; it’s full of misogyny and involves the rape and torture of women and animals. It is book by incels for incels.
It’s entirely without merit and has no place on Audible.

One of the first LitRPGs, but also not good.
Revisado: 03-27-23
Picked this up after making my way through the other big LitRPG series that are recommended. Tried this out as it is a popular series. It is not good.
The story is bland and has the typical YA protagonist who is a loner on Earth and is dumped in the new world. There are attempts at humor - pretty low quality jokes. Lots of stat dumps and repetitive descriptions. Aside from the MC none of the characters have any depth. Lots of male gaze. No meaningful female characters. Blech.
The production is horrific. As an audiobook, it’s awful. Each in book notification is accompanied by a tone or chime that is significantly louder than the narration. So, every few minutes you have a doorbell blasting in your ear. Who signed off on that? The narration is otherwise good.
Between the the low quality story / plot and the sound effects, this is a series to avoid.

Historia
Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate. Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Empowered by the "System", he learns that he can strengthen himself through combat and dedication.

As bad as the reviews say.
Revisado: 03-19-23
Every hurdle is just a silly power up from being defeated. The final third of the book is just incomprehensible.
It also has one of the more annoying LitRPG issues where the characters have to deal with finding the perfect combo of potions and magic seeds to progress. It’s just bloat.

Just another lazy Deus Ex Machina conclusion
Revisado: 12-03-22
This a lazy and terrible finish (or midpoint) to a promising series. The author stops the interesting problem solving farming storyline and everything changes to battles that get resolved out of nowhere.
It stinks.

Historia
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Don’t understand the hype
Revisado: 10-23-22
It’s a totally OK book. Massively hyped for what it is.
I think it suffers from mediocre narration. I had no idea there were three storylines until halfway through. Not much difference between them.
The Orka story and the Varg stories are interesting, but the lack of any pay off is a big disappointment.
The book just meanders around then ends without any payoff. No relation to the 3 povs other than two of them ending in the same spot.
It’s well written, but it’s not good.

Just filler - avoid it.
Revisado: 08-19-22
This is part of the LitRPG trend of pushing out partial books that are just a few minutes of plot and hours of filler. Prior to this entry, DOTF was very consistent and high quality, however, this entry can be skipped completely.
There is essentially zero advancement of the plot. Nothing happens and it simply leaves the reader at yet another spot midway through a quest with no real stakes.
I get that the demand is there for more books and the publisher and author can cash in by pushing out more entries, but is reaching a point where it is simply not worth the time and money.

Revisado: 06-22-22
This is like playing Civilization -- everything is going really well, then suddenly you end up spending 45 minutes each turn checking in on all of the cities and reviewing what amount to spreadsheets. The plot just stops dead in this book. No thanks.

Just a chore
Revisado: 05-14-22
This series really turned on a dime. The addition of Julia as a character and the endless silly arguments ruin a fun series. Could not finish.
The attempts to force in more pop culture references really do nothing to help the story.

Historia
Before he was the Gray Man, Court Gentry was Sierra Six, the junior member of a CIA action team. In their first mission, they took out a terrorist leader, at a terrible price. Years have passed. The Gray Man is on a simple mission when he sees a ghost: the long-dead terrorist, but he's remarkably energetic for a dead man. A decade of time hasn't changed the Gray Man. He isn't one to leave a job unfinished or a blood debt unpaid.

This is another achievement by Mark Greaney. It’s surprising that we are so many books into the series and he is able to continuously produce top quality books.
Amazing narration as always. Looking forward to the next book.
