Historia
An Immense World will take us on an insider's tour of the natural world by describing the biology, physics and chemistry animals use to perceive it. We may lack some of their senses, but our own super-sense lies in our ability to understand theirs. And in the face of the largest extinction event since the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, our only hope of saving other species is bound up with our ability to see what they see, and feel what they feel.

Gorgeous but difficult
Revisado: 03-23-25
Maybe not the best for the audiobook listener who does other stuff simultaneously. It’s very information dense and you have to focus. Other than that, I’ve learned a ton and feel I’m a better person for having read it.

Historia
Opening with a panorama of Russian society, from the cloistered world of the Tsar to the brutal life of the peasants, A People’s Tragedy follows workers, soldiers, intellectuals and villagers as their world is consumed by revolution and then degenerates into violence and dictatorship. Drawing on vast original research, Figes conveys above all the shocking experience of the revolution for those who lived it, while providing the clearest and most cogent account of how and why it unfolded.

Beautiful, detailed, long

As most of figes books, it is incredibly detailed. In this instance, maybe a little too much so.

Historia
In 1979, Neda Toloui-Semnani’s parents left the United States for Iran to join the revolution. But the promise of those early heady days in Tehran was warped by the rise of the Islamic Republic. With the new regime came international isolation, cultural devastation, and profound personal loss for Neda. Her father was arrested and her mother was forced to make a desperate escape, pregnant and with Neda in tow.

Beautifully personal
Revisado: 01-04-24
It’s beautifully narrated but 2-3 chapters too long. I didn’t care for the diary chapters at the end and would have preferred them to be interwoven with the story. And frankly, most of them to have been left on the editing floor. Until the last couple of chapters it was beautifully crafted, with a lot of space for the nuance this story needs. It was always very personal, while it was also clear that the writer understood the wider (geo)political context. Very impressive.

Historia
What if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self—a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against? Not long ago, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who.

Smart and beautiful

The story is great, so much more than it seems at first glance. I did not enjoy listening to the author’s voice and would have preferred a professional reader.

I’m a feminist classicist myself and it is a little disconcerting that so many of these retellings are being written now and not by me. But I loved this and will try to keep an abundance mindset.

Historia
A squirrel in the garden. A rat in the wall. A pigeon on the street. Humans have spent so much of our history drawing a hard line between human spaces and wild places. When animals pop up where we don’t expect or want them, we respond with fear, rage, or simple annoyance. It’s no longer an animal. It’s a pest. At the intersection of science, history, and narrative journalism, Pests is not a simple call to look closer at our urban ecosystem. It’s not a natural history of the animals we hate. Instead, this book is about us.

Learned a lot
Revisado: 08-06-23
I deducted one star from the narrator for bad pronunciation of unfamiliar words. When it’s read by a professional, those should be taken out. It’s just disrespectful to people who are not American, an affliction which the author tried so hard to avoid.

This is a story about you. It is the history of who you are and how you came to be. It is unique to you, as it is for every one of the 100 billion modern humans who has ever drawn breath. But it is also our collective story, because in each of our genomes we carry the history of the whole of our species.

If I have one quibble, it’s that I would have preferred the audiobook to have been organized into smaller chunks with actual titles beyond chapter numbers. That would have been easier to navigate.

Historia
Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today’s developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world.

Good book, mediocre performance
Revisado: 01-22-23
This book deserves a better audio editor. There are many mispronunciations of words and sentences.
I learned a lot from this expansive reconfiguration of existing ideas and literature.

Historia
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet - sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors - doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice.

Excellent exploration of migration and modern life
Revisado: 05-16-21
This book does what good literature does. It changes the world to suit the story, but only slightly. And then the story expands the horizon of the audience. It’s not the same as when it were read by an actor, but in some ways I prefer this. It reminds me of being read to by my dad.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Not a book!
Revisado: 11-07-18
This is not a book! Fry calls the chapter episodes, it’s more like a podcast or radio series. As such, it’s very interesting. And fry is marvelous as always.
