Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

absolutely terrific
Revisado: 03-30-25
The narration and narrator were the best; good pace, good tone. I had listened to Tom Sawyer years ago so had a ground for start, but that really wasn't necessary for this story. James, the man, represented everyman or at least how I hoped or wished for everyman to be. I really enjoyed all the small tales that unfolded along the way... several really well defined characters, tho mostly awful humans in my opinion, but crucial to the story. I will definitely search for another book by Mr Everett and also another with this narrator.

Historia
Anna is at a stage of her life when she's beginning to wonder who she really is. She has separated from her husband, her daughter is all grown up, and her mother - the only parent who raised her - is dead. Searching through her mother's belongings one day, Anna finds clues about the African father she never knew. His student diaries chronicle his involvement in radical politics in 1970s London. Anna discovers that he eventually became the president - some would say dictator - of a small nation in West Africa. And he is still alive.

I enjoyed the story a lot. Very interesting. The narrator did well with all the voices & accents, but I was often frustrated with her varied tones, requiring me to be frequently adjusting the volume. A bit annoying.

Such courage!
Revisado: 07-20-23
The book was well done & I highly recommend it for everyone who has even the slightest interest in humanity. We cannot know from experience what all tracts in life exist, but Ms Lloyd gives us an incredible view into the world of children sold into sex work in this book. It's appalling, to say the least.
She & all "her girls" bravely reveal bits of themselves from their experiences; Ms Lloyd courageously baring her soul. But the glowing spirit of each still dominates their stories.
What an incredible view she gives us into the work that's been accomplished & all that's still to be done. I loved the book.

Historia
As it was in Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, and Othello, so it is in life. Most forms of private vice and public evil are kindled and sustained by lies. Acts of adultery and other personal betrayals, financial fraud, government corruption - even murder and genocide - generally require an additional moral defect: a willingness to lie. In Lying, bestselling author and neuroscientist Sam Harris argues that we can radically simplify our lives and improve society by merely telling the truth in situations where others often lie.

Definitely not a struggle to listen. Appreciate the brevity so I can easily do repeat listens. Sam Harris always has things to say that hit home for me.

Historia
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

No struggle here
Revisado: 05-02-22
The author, as narrator a did a great job. She read of her early journey with life & the cancer that was dealt her. She navigates it all with honesty & clarity even when nothing is ever clear. She shares her many connections with virtual strangers & the messages she gleens from them...always being propelled into the next moment. Ms Jaouad writes beautifully & speaks it all with a silky smooth voice. I thank her for her courage to share.

Paul was reading a newspaper. Catherine was reading a novel. So begins Room on the Sea, André Aciman's scorching and elegiac love-story about a middle-aged man and woman who meet in the bullpen of jury selection and spend a sultry summer’s week trespassing ever further into each other's hearts. What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something deeper, something Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret - and with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question.

May SC rise up!
Revisado: 08-17-21
Here is a story of a man who loves his home state of SC. He makes no bones about it. As this very personal tale unfolds, Mr Sellers frequently restates his desires for ways to improve his state in particular and for black people in general. His narration was great. This was an easy, enlightening & entertaining listen. Not too long either....(but then he is young & might have a tome for a memoir in another 30+years.) Good book! And I'm not from SC. I'm old, white & a woman.

Historia
It’s 1929 in New York City. In an apartment high above Lexington Avenue, the painter Georgia O’Keeffe feels stuck. At 42, she should be at the apex of her powers as an artist, and yet something is missing. Her husband - the gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who helped build her reputation in the art world - has grown needy and insecure, not to mention unfaithful. More than this, her work has lost its fire, and she knows it. The calla lilies and poppies for which she is revered now seem careful, predictable.

A good listen
Revisado: 05-30-21
If you like learning about people in today's history and how they want to reveal themselves, then this is very good. Ms Rice is a woman I have admired greatly for her moral & ethical convictions. She describes some of how she came to be wired in such a way. She explains her time in our history & how she saw & performed in her various roles in the political arena. I do not think she is a great reader, as she narrates with a choppy cadence at times. But I would not have wanted another to have been the narrator; her way of narrating told me yet more about her. And that was fine with me.

Revisado: 05-30-21
The narration by the author is perfect. Audible could offer him yet another future. I've listened to this too many times to count. It has become a bedtime favorite as I already have heard it in its entirety & can now just hear a portion before sleep overcomes me. The narrator /author /musician also shares some of his performance pieces in this audible treat. I just love this quiet reveal by this gifted artist man.
