A must for River fans

If you’re a fan of River Song, and especially of her reality-melting last episodes, then I can’t think of a better treat than this story by Alex Kingston, as performed by her. It plays up in turns the 1930s pastiche that is Melody Malone, the lightness of the character of River Song, and the high stakes of powerful artifacts in the Whoniverse.

It is only in the tiniest fragments a Doctor Who story, but it completely a River Song story. Alex Kingston knows all the details a nerd could want, and brings them together in an exciting adventure.

I hope she’s up for it!

This is my first time reading this series and her performances are such a delight. I know to expect changes in the written style of the series but her reading (and singing) is a pure pleasure.

another delightful romp

Jodi Taylor doesn’t let up, and nor does Zara Ramm’s narration. I had re-listened to the whole damn series leading into the release of this book, and it was very enjoyable.

The new book … how do you say “more of the same” without it sounding boring? Because of course it isn’t. Boring, that is.

Max takes as many risks as ever, surrounded by the characters I love, in the kinds of situations that keep me listening late into the night. And Jodi Taylor keeps providing imaginative twists, with some proper fakeouts in the mix. To say more would be to spoil the fun! If you’ve come this far, you’ll want to read this one too.

A stand-alone with a new detective, but Kate Martinelli fans will find a familiar face anyway!

I liked this quite a lot, in terms of pacing and how the story built tension. I’m agnostic regarding hearing more from this heroine vs other stories from Laurie R King—either would be good!

This is good. In some ways it’s excellent. But by god, King needs to allow editors to do their jobs!

Minor spoiler for the premise of the book:

Our protagonist has to live through the years leading up to JFK’s assassination in order to get there, and it feels like we do too. I feel about half the length of this book was unnecessary and/or counterproductive. Just because you do all the research, doesn’t mean you need to include it all! (Neal Stephenson also take note.)

I don’t understand all the 5-star reviews.

Too gory for YA, too weak a storyline for adult.

I think the author moved paragraphs around in editing and didn’t follow up with a fresh reader to see if it all held together. Facts the protagonist knows in one chapter come to her as revelations in a later chapter. Things are explained twice in quick succession. The protagonist is too clueless for words. It simply does not all hold together.

Whether or not this is a story worth telling, it is not told well.

I’m glad I got it on sale—I’d hate to have spent a full credit on it.

cliffhanger!

No spoilers here, other than to say this book ends on as big a cliffhanger as I can think of. Don’t buy without intending to buy the next book too!

I recommend both. If you liked how the series began, I think you’ll like the rest. Just know what you’re getting into.
