Chizmar assembles 35 stories, including a previously unpublished novella, and presents us with A Long December. This massive new collection features more than 150,000 words of Chizmar's very best short fiction and includes 8,000 words of autobiographical story notes. Eerie, suspenseful, poignant, the stories in A Long December range from horror to suspense, crime to dark fantasy, mainstream to mystery.

Excellent
Revisado: 03-27-23
Chizmar is an expert storyteller. He’s able to pack so much into a small package. Don’t listen to the negative reviews. The stories are excellent and compelling. I loved the characters and the themes.

Historia
There are three ways up to Castle View from the town of Castle Rock: Route 117, Pleasant Road, and the Suicide Stairs. Every day in the summer of 1974, 12-year-old Gwendy Peterson has taken the stairs, which are held by strong (if time-rusted) iron bolts and zigzag up the cliffside. At the top of the stairs, Gwendy catches her breath and listens to the shouts of the kids on the playground. One day a stranger calls to Gwendy: "Hey, girl. Come on over here for a bit. We ought to palaver, you and me."

I love this collaboration. The Gwendy trilogy is so much fun. King and Chizmar have created an excellent 3rd voice. Kingmar.

Historia
It's been three long years since Deadbreak. That's what everyone's calling it - the day the dead rose. Every day since then, Jeremiah Reid has had one goal: to make his way back to his daughter. With his four-legged companion, Joe, Jeremiah has to travel a lawless wasteland teeming with zombies, bandits, and worse, like people who put anchovies on pizza (you know who you are). It's a new world out there, and no one is safe. People are weary, cities are in ruin, supplies are scarce, and brains are on the menu.

In the ancient kingdom of Dumnonia, there is old magic to be found in the whisper of the wind, the roots of the trees, the curl of the grass. King Cador knew this once, but now the land has turned from him, calling instead to his three children. Riva can cure others, but can’t seem to heal her own deep scars. Keyne battles to be accepted for who he truly is—the king’s son. And Sinne dreams of seeing the world, of finding adventure.

Historia
Bea’s five-year-old daughter, Agnes, is slowly wasting away, consumed by the smog and pollution of the overdeveloped metropolis that most of the population now calls home. If they stay in the city, Agnes will die. There is only one alternative: the Wilderness State, the last swath of untouched, protected land, where people have always been forbidden. Until now.

Dystopian Twist

This was an enjoyable listen. There were no big surprises or dramatic turns. It was a different take on a dystopian future where humans are, as usual, a mess.

Historia
Little Marek, the abused and delusional son of the village shepherd, believes his mother died giving birth to him. One of Marek’s few consolations is his enduring bond with the blind village midwife, Ina, who suckled him when he was a baby. For some people, Ina’s ability to receive transmissions of sacred knowledge from the natural world is a godsend. For others, Ina’s home in the woods is a godless place.

Deliciously Grotesque
Revisado: 09-09-22
This book made me uncomfortable from beginning to end. All the characters are terrible people doing terrible things. It’s a true horror story and I absolutely loved it. I was creeped out from the beginning to the end. The writing is excellent. The author is also the narrator and did an excellent job conveying her story. If you’re easily offended and a bit of a snowflake you will not like this book. This is a timeless story of how monstrous human beings can be. Not for the faint of heart.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Historia
In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three. A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time. A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory. And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible. An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

Blown Away!
Revisado: 07-24-22
This is now one of my favourite books. The story is so complex and required my full attention while listening. This was easy because I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. What a roller coaster ride! I couldn’t stop listening. In fact, I’m relistening as I write this review. I’ve also downloaded all Catriona Ward’s books just based on the quality of this one. It’s so exciting for me to discover a new author to love!

Lot of fun!
Revisado: 01-05-22
I’m really enjoying this series thus far. The only real complaint is that of Neil Kaplans narration. Half of his characters like John and Henri are great. Sam’s voice is horrible. It’s grating. It’s too bad because he is such an important character.
