scratches that Fantasy and Military Sci Fi itch
Revisado: 03-17-21
If you like Galaxy's Edge and Lord of the Rings, this is for you. the narrator is good and fits the character, but there were a couple of times audio had to be recorded that jumped out. not often, but a bit distracting.
I love the authors and this book is the beginning of a new series I hope to read all of!

Historia
Flynn is stuck - depressed, recently dumped, and living at his mom’s house. The supermarket was supposed to change all that. An ordinary job and a steady check. Work isn’t work when it’s saving you from yourself. But things aren’t quite as they seem in these aisles. Arriving to work one day to a crime scene, Flynn’s world collapses as the secrets of his tortured mind are revealed. And Flynn doesn’t want to go looking for answers at the supermarket. Because something there seems to be looking for him.

Unfortunately bad.
Revisado: 05-24-19
I love the music of Bobby Hall AKA "Logic." He always talks about his books and movies in the works, and his inspirations being Quentin Tarantino etc. Unfortunately this book is a really bad reimagining of Fight Club and if you've seen the movie this book is 100% predictable.
Also, all the dialogue is really bad. Every character is constantly saying the name of every other character, and this becomes extremely annoying and makes the "surprise twists" even more choreographed and unsurprising.
I feel like the author had his friends read this and no one told him "no" because they knew it would sell because he is so famous. I feel like everyone rating this highly has never read a book until this one. They are obviously Logic fans and young, so the high ratings are natural.
The main idea isn't bad; a struggling author starts a new job as inspiration for his book, that he decides he will finish at all costs. The problem is the rest of the novel. I gave it a shot and finished it, unfortunately I just don't see the point of keeping it. The sections he wrote about mental illness were interesting (no idea at all if they are accurate) and the fight scene was almost gratuitously violent and shocking considering the mildness of the rest of the book. If it was balls-to-the-wall crazy the entire way through, I wouldn't take it so seriously. I wish the author didn't take it so seriously.

Uninspired but entertaining
Revisado: 08-10-18
I loved the Bobiverse, and I think that series tackled the complex moral issues much better than this one. I actually really liked the main character, and his decisions felt mature and accurate, but the plot was just a little silly.
And the strangest coincidence happened. I had just watched a video on Game Theory and the prisoner's dilemma; this concept was literally mentioned and drove the entire last third of the book. It would have been an interesting coincidence to drive a chapter but it was like all anyone could talk about for a while. In the end it just didn't pay off.

I love this book, I only wish it had more Northerners. Online, many say this book is the best of the trilogy, with maybe The Heroes edging it out. I would agree with that assessment.

A great introduction to Peterson, but...
Revisado: 08-06-18
I don't think this book says everything that Peterson is known for saying. It is a good book, but it's kind of the watered down "life pro tips" that he's gotten famous for saying. If you've seen his lectures or talks, you've heard all of these stories before. And you also know that he has a lot more controversial opinions; none of them will be in here.
This is a high-quality recording though, and an enjoyable book if you're new to the author.

I've read a couple of these types of books over the last year or two. They are becoming pretty popular. The premise is that the main character is playing a VR game, and you get to watch. There is usually a convenient set of circumstances that leads them to be in charge. The book is not exactly literature or anything fancy, but it entertains.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Fantastic narrator
Revisado: 05-08-17
The book was helpful to me as I'm going through a life change, and I think the lessons are pretty universal. Reading this book will probably help me interpret other "self help" type books. The author freely admits details and decisions of his past, including mistakes, and tells you how being wrong is part of the human experience. I can't summarize this book in such a short time, but I don't think it's a waste of time unless you have already read tons of self help books (this is my first).

Dislike the narrator, but it's good!
Revisado: 04-24-17
This book has a LOT of parallels to Play to Live. Unique direction though.
I like how the players never get trapped in the game, like most other VRMMO stories I've read.
I'm excited to see where book 2 goes, because this book ended on a hopeful note, yet there has to be some upcoming crisis to be interesting, right? It definitely isn't a stand alone novel though, it would be a bit unsatisfying if there wasn't a sequel.
