Historia
Last Chance Texaco is the first-ever no-holds-barred account of the life of two-time Grammy Award-winner Rickie Lee Jones in her own words. It is a tale of desperate chances and impossible triumphs, an adventure story of a girl who beat the odds and grew up to become one of the most legendary artists of her time, turning adversity and hopelessness into timeless music.

Beautiful, Sad Story Well Told
Revisado: 08-04-21
Jones has long been a story teller and poet in her songwriting, and both those gifts come through in her memoir. After hearing her read this in her own voice, I'm glad I chose the audio over the print version. She is telling it from the heart, and even if a few spots seemed a little melodramatic, I believed her. Listening is like being in the room with her.

Historia
1838: James and Sadie Goodenough have settled where their wagon got stuck - in the muddy, stagnant swamps of northwest Ohio. They and their five children work relentlessly to tame their patch of land, buying saplings from a local tree man known as John Appleseed so they can cultivate the 50 apple trees required to stake their claim on the property. But the orchard they plant sows the seeds of a long battle. James loves the apples, reminders of an easier life back in Connecticut; while Sadie prefers the applejack they make, an alcoholic refuge from brutal frontier life.

another good read
Revisado: 10-20-20
Every book by Chevallier has been different and entertaining in a new way. This one develops more male characters. I'm impressed with her ability to take the reader to so many different places and periods of history.

Historia
Emmeline lives on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses. What he won’t explain are the mysterious scents stored in glass bottles that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them. As Emmeline grows, however, so too does her curiosity, until one day the unforeseen happens, and Emmeline is vaulted out into the real world—a place of love, betrayal, ambition, and revenge. To understand her past, Emmeline must unlock the clues to her identity.

some weak parts
Revisado: 08-20-20
This was a good casual read but as the plot progressed it felt more contrived and more suited for younger readers.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

a wonderful story

I enjoyed listening to this well written story and found both readers engaging. It was poignant and timely to read about the Spanish flu during our current pandemic and to learn a little about the agrarian reforms in Mexico.
