Unrealistic and one dimensional characters with lots of horrible events described.
Revisado: 01-17-22
This author Was one of my favorites until I read this book. The story concerned the 1965 civil rights group SCOPE with a modern parallel story. The modern story was about Kayla, a widowed mother moving into a house on land that came with a tragic history. It was interesting but had too much horror. The 1965 story was about a young southern girl’s time helping with civil rights in the very poor and bigoted south. Both stories dragged and repeated the same type of sad or creepy tales over and over. In addition, the 1965 story was completely unrealistic in the description of how well the workers of both races got along and the characters were portrayed as either completely evil or completely angelic. Normally this authors characters grow and learn through the story and there is some realization of their mistakes, but not in this story. There was a little bit of historical facts and a lot of made up characters who were too evil to be redeemed in the end. The ending of the story was grisly, and the described in great detail. It seemed as if the books purpose was to be as graphic as possible and for the reader to understand that evil bigots could not change or even attempt to repair the pain and damage caused by their actions. By the end I resolved that this would be my last book by this author and on this sad subject.

Revisado: 11-19-21
The West’s Awake alternated between “can’t put it down” and “not sure I want to finish.”
The story of Harp going to America on a mission and of Rose and Harp’s villainous Father we’re highly interesting and full of twists. The reader was fantastic when she had the woman’s voice and the brogue, but the way the “mans”” voice sounded was off and comical. No normal man sounds like that . The beginning of the book with all the “woman’s rights” talk was boring and not too realistic for the time period. The politics may have been part of the story, but was not enjoyable. So not sure about getting the next in the series but it’s possible.

Interesting mystery, too much immoral behavior
Revisado: 11-05-21
I enjoyed the story as far as the mystery element and some of the historical descriptions. Having grown up in that time period, of the 60s and 70’s it was fun to revisit some of the cultural oddities. What I did not enjoy was the frequent references to adolescent sexual feelings and the many sexual relationships. Especially the relationship that the Italian girl, Maria had with Ross. Catholic Italian girls from the 1940’s did not give themselves to young men and act in such a sneaky way, No matter how little they went to church. I grew up in that culture and although not unheard of, it was rare. Also distressing were all the rather funny references young Julie made to her confessions when she clearly didn’t intend to live up to the high ideals called for in her church. As an adult her first reaction to her daughters pregnancy was to tell her to have an abortion, and her first real date with Ethan was all about sex. It seemed mocking to Catholics to portray these women as so deceitful and immoral. And then there was Shannon, clearly portrayed as the perfect modern spoiled, and ungrateful airhead with the same pitiful moral standards. Diane Chamberlain’s story would have been better without all of her drama and all the other soap opera affairs. In fact, some of Diane’s other books, such as the Stolen marriage, and the Dream Daughter, were excellent stories, without all of the trashy scenes that this book contained. In those books, she portrayed the characters as true to their cultures and religions. If I had known this book contained so much of this material, I would not have chosen to listen to it.

Now I know what’s wrong with today’s world
Revisado: 10-27-21
The book started out interestingly. But the 70s garbage was a bit much. Since I lived through that time, it brought back memories and as the title states: The world mess was beginning full swing then. The book bogged down as the ladies were young* adults and I am not sure I want to finish it.

Historia
Toren Daniels vanished eight months back, and his wife and kids have moved on - with more than a little relief. Toren was a good man but carried a raging temper that often exploded without warning. So when he shows up on their doorstep out of the blue, they're shocked to see him alive. But more shocked to see he's changed. Radically. His anger is gone. He's oddly patient. Kind. Fun. Toren has no clue where he's been but knows he's been utterly transformed. He focuses on three things: Finding out where he's been. Finding out how it happened. And winning back his family.

Painful story and audio
Revisado: 10-25-21
Although the book has an interesting concept, “taming the inner demon of anger”, it is painful to listen to. First, there are too many descriptions of Torne’s anger and verbal abuse. Then there is an especially horrible scene with his father beating him at age 10, And most of all, there are his pathetic attempts to win his wife back while barely holding his anger in. We all know that men like him don’t change, no matter how many bible verses they read, even with the supposed help he got in the mystery place in the Southwest. I found that I didn’t care to finish the book, and if the book ended with family reconciliation, that would be a sad ending. The audio in the book was abysmal. The voice is fine when Torne is speaking. But when the speaker tries to use a woman’s voice, it is laughable. When he uses a young persons voice, he sounds like he is mentally retarded. Maybe the book will appeal to the more violent types of ball players, but I didn’t care for it.

Great life lesson told in a captivating story.
Revisado: 10-19-21
Enjoyable throughout. I loved the lesson on truth telling. I thought the author had a great grasp of hypocrisy. There was great adventure in Parker’s life and a fun spiritual twist. It dragged a bit in the middle during the frustrating saga of Allison’s job. But overall I couldn’t wait to listen to it.

Can’t get interested in this book
Revisado: 10-02-21
After listening to a few chapters, I decided to return this audio. The story was already boring. Scenes of Rachel returning to help her grandma were read with flashbacks to past tragedies and some sexual descriptions of a “not quite” adulterous liaison. The tragedies seemed dark, and I dislike books that contain adulterous emotional or physical affairs or that give sexual details. And the story was not too captivating.

Enjoyable, unpredictable and intriguing.
Revisado: 09-26-21
Great suspense, romance, intrigue and history in one book. I especially enjoyed the 40’s history and thought the author had the Italian culture, and the snobby, small minded southern belle culture pretty well pegged. She did a great job describing both the mystery and strictness of the 1940’s Catholic Church. Having lived in all three of these cultures, her descriptions rang true to me. Not only that, but the story was interesting, well researched and not predictable. (Although one dissatisfied reviewer spilled the story about Henry’s true love and his “end, but This did not spoil the story for me due to its interesting plot and characters). What I didn’t care for was the part about the medium and calling the spirits of the dead. In addition to adding a creepy vibe, the practice of calling up the dead is against the Catholic religion and did not fit into Tess’s otherwise strong Catholicism. I also did not care for some of the more graphic descriptions, including Henry’s night with Tess, the almost abortion, and some of the polio scenes. And it would have been accurate to put more blame on Henry who took advantage of a naive young women and had some devious plans. Otherwise the story was captivating and I look forward to trying out more of the authors books.

Very captivating story.
Revisado: 09-13-21
I enjoyed this riveting story! It was filled with suspense, and not at all predictable. The only reason for the 4 rating vs a 5 is that I found the character of the teenage Bailey very hard to like. She was just such a spoiled brat! And in the end, it was all about her. What she needed and what was best for her, even though it meant others suffered some big losses. All things considered, it was a great story.
