Historia
As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity.

Historia
Small Bones in a Fist is composed of stories drawn from Blindboy's first two published books: The Gospel According to Blindboy and Boulevard Wren and Other Stories. Curated, narrated and scored by the author, Small Bones in a Fist is a surreal, provocative and darkly funny introduction to one of the most original voices in Irish literature.

The collection showcases laughter, fear, rage, dread, and love in ways I've never seen before. Blindboy Boatclub's cadence and delivery is spot on, as well. I highly recommend it.

Historia
Since she burst spectacularly into view with her debut novel almost two decades ago, Zadie Smith has established herself not just as one of the world's preeminent fiction writers but also a brilliant and singular essayist. She contributes regularly to The New Yorker and the New York Review of Books on a range of subjects, and each piece of hers is a literary event in its own right.

Sometimes Mostly On Point
Revisado: 08-15-23
While some of the pieces (especially the ones regarding brexit and the "attunement" to beautiful works of art) offer interesting and unique perspectives, I had some problems with other pieces. The critiques of facebook and social media in general feel a bit dated and broad and the piece on the film Anomalisa jumped straight into laying out and spoiling intricate little details and easter eggs in the story and set design (so much so that I had to quickly pause the book, fearing that there wouldn't be anything left to discover.)
I love Zadie Smith but this collection is not the strongest example of what she can do.

Historia
The year 1904. On the banks of the Zambezi River, a few miles from the majestic Victoria Falls, there is a colonial settlement called The Old Drift. In a smoky room at the hotel across the river, an Old Drifter named Percy M. Clark, foggy with fever, makes a mistake that entangles the fates of an Italian hotelier and an African busboy. This sets off a cycle of unwitting retribution between three Zambian families (black, white, brown) as they collide and converge over the course of the century, into the present and beyond.

Revisado: 02-11-23
I thought it was impossible for a single work to cover so many enormous topics over such a long period of time and still somehow stick the landing. Namwali Serpell has done it, she’s achieved that impossibility with a style and beauty that I have never seen before. Standing ovation, lifelong fan.

Historia
The construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning reveals the history of racist ideas in America, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.
