Historia
When journalist Annabelle Tometich picks up the phone one June morning, she isn’t expecting a collect call from an inmate at the Lee County Jail. And when she accepts, she certainly isn’t prepared to hear her mother’s voice on the other end of the line. However, explaining the situation to her younger siblings afterwards was easy; all she had to say was, “Mom shot at some guy. He was messing with her mangoes.” They immediately understood.

Must read for those with roots in SW Fl.
Revisado: 02-23-25
I cannot say enough to recommend this memoir. It’s written by a 43 yo woman who grew up in Ft. Myers, just as my 43 yo daughter did. She simply nails both the charms & the oddities of life in SW Florida. Her detailed descriptions of life in pre- hey day Ft. Myers took me right back to working as a nurse at Community Hospital, taking my kids to Lion’s Park and living off of McGregor Blvd. (throughout the book I was asking myself- have I crossed paths with her mother? With her?)
What I appreciated most though was how she gave a voice to the complexities of race and belonging in a county named after a Confederate general that literally had tracks separating racial groups when I moved there in the late seventies. Her’s is a unique viewpoint told with unflinching honesty, self-awareness & compassion. She is truly a gifted journalist & storyteller.
A highly recommended read for everyone & a must read for those with any roots in SW Florida.

Inspiring, Humorous & Uplifting
Revisado: 09-14-22
This is not just the story of a cancer diagnosis, it the story of a young women faced with a situation that turned her world upside down and how she dealt with it. Her humor and insights into her own limiting beliefs inspire & -oddly enough- entertain at the same time. Can cancer be fun? I’m not sure about that but I am sure that she gives us a chance to question ourselves and how we limit our own happiness even in the darkest of situations. I loved hearing her own voice and the passion behind it as she narrated the book.
