Historia
Coming from scandalous Florida treasure hunters and drug smugglers, Sloan McPherson is forging her own path, for herself and for her daughter, out from under her family’s shadow. An auxiliary officer for Lauderdale Shores PD, she’s the go-to diver for evidence recovery. Then Sloan finds a fresh kill floating in a canal - a woman whose murky history collides with Sloan’s. Their troubling ties are making Sloan less a potential witness than a suspect. And her colleagues aren’t the only ones following every move she makes. So is the killer.

Relatable characters
Revisado: 02-05-25
At least for this Florida woman. The main character's job is creepy but not icky. Every dive makes me cringe a bit, knowing the kind of water she's entering and the creature danger within. The story isn't bad, sort of run of the mill good cop/bad cop stuff but it isn't boring. I like the narrator EXCEPT when she mispronounced locales, like Broward rhymes with Howard, not however she says it. All narrators should look up location pronunciations for all books they do. I'll be listening to more books in this series and see what else the writer has done.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 01-31-25
I liked the story premise, but it left me feeling uneasy and angry. SPOILER ALERT: There was no lesson learned whatsoever about the danger of opening your life so wide on social media. Not one mention made that all that happened was due entirely to careless social media use. Not only that, she continued on afterward as if it had nothing to do with exposing her family to lunatics. It is inconceivable to me that her mother never mentioned it, nor did the main character as a police officer. Had any of that been incorporated in any way it would have been a good story.

Better to read
Revisado: 09-08-24
I really love this series and Bree in particular. I’ve read them up until this book. I’ve already bought the next one so I’ll listen to it, too. After that, back to reading. The narrator is annoying, especially the voice for Matt. He always sounds half asleep. She reads it without much emotion and at an uneven pace. Robotic would be close to describing her style.
As for the story, it’s good and interesting. A worthy entry in this series.

Slow and predictable
Revisado: 07-27-23
Got through 4 chapters before skipping to last one. I'm no genius but saw it all coming. The narration would have been great had the two narrators decided on a speed. The first one was fine, second one too slow. Alternating the reading speed every chapter hastened my exit.

I have loved listening to this entire series. I've often laughed hard and long picturing Miss Julia during her antics. Mrs. Ross is a very skilled writer. Nothing predictable and characters I wish I could meet - even if Miss Julia and company wouldn't approve of my tattoos and pierced nose.

Nice series better to read
Revisado: 06-29-22
I read the first book, started the second then noticed it in my audible library so switched. Stuck it out for the story but won't be listening to any others. As many others have said, the narration is horrible. She sounds like she's reading aloud instead of narrating in a natural tone. The male voices are just pathetic. She ruins what is an otherwise enjoyable series.

Enjoyable read, likable characters
Revisado: 01-06-21
I picked this story on a whim, not realizing I had read the author before - Book 4 of the Joe O'Loughlin series. Now I'll be going back to start that series from the beginning. His writing style is easy and conversational. He doesn't over-describe surroundings or people. As a refreshing bonus, no political snarky comments! The story is interesting and, as others have noted, incomplete which Robotham will hopefully remedy by making this a series.
SPOILER ALERT
An avid mystery and suspense reader, I often guess "who done it" and when correct am both pleased with myself and disappointed with the author not being more clever. This book I had help, though wish I didn't. Having recently discovered my NPE status (Not Parent Expected) via Ancestry and 21 & Me, I saw the story line coming early on. The telling part for me was I continued listening all the way through without skipping to the end. Those are my 5-star books.

Very good all around
Revisado: 10-08-20
The characters are what drew me in. Calling it a thriller, or even a mystery, is a bit of a stretch. It unfolds more like a story, in a good way. The narrator was fine to me, and I'm usually picky about that. Having lived in several southern states including North Carolina I've heard people talk as they were portrayed. Only thing I found a mildly irritating was a character obviously "influenced" by The Green Mile. Not the character himself but the blatant ripoff. Come up with your own version! It all tied up a little too neatly but I'd take that over leaving loose threads. All in all a book worthy of a credit.

Judge by content not rumor
Revisado: 09-30-20
I love this series. It surprised me when the true author was revealed as I'm not a big fan of the Harry Potter series. Much of that has to do with trying to keep track of so many characters and the book lengths. This installment in the Strike/Robin series edges closer to that in both those ways. Luckily I didn't look at the length before I purchased it, being so happy another book was finally out. It went by fairly quickly, didn't seem to drag on to me. The characters, though, were a bit harder to remember who's who, but that may have to do with sometimes listening to it at work. When you're referencing people by name as well as two different zodiac signs it can get confusing. The plot was well thought out, the characters interesting, and the embers still smoldering between them.
I won't do a synopsis. I don't write reviews often. This one felt needed due to the negative publicity. To label this book as transphobic isn't so much a stretch as a delusion - and outright lie. One of the characters, a serial killer, cross-dresses during some of his crimes. I can't even remember if he does when not committing crimes, but it's irrelevant. He's of smaller stature and it makes it easier to deceive any potential witnesses. Is that the only reason? I've no idea. It wasn't made an issue other than the potential that he could be someone an eyewitness spotted during the crime at the heart of the story. That's it, all there is to it. There have been lots of real life cross-dressing murderers for whom that's an integral part of their crimes and fantasy entanglement. That's not even how it's presented in this book. Utterly ridiculous and in my opinion, libelous to make the accusation.

Could have been marvelous
Revisado: 06-06-19
Most of the story was interesting and logical. Then... it wasn't. Given the length, the characters weren't as fleshed out as they could have been. The premise was great, the tie-ins mostly sound. Perhaps the foreshadowing got in the way, unnecessarily causing one to remember back - way back, as in hours ago of listening. The ending didn't sit well, either. Lucy was always presented as straightforward and rational, logical at all endeavors no matter her age. Contrived seems an apt description of the explanatory conclusion. This is my first story by this author. I'd give her another shot, but only with a far shorter story.
