Historia
Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, he argues, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws both in our justice system and in human nature. Bharara uses the many illustrative anecdotes and case histories from his storied, formidable career - the successes as well as the failures - to shed light on the realities of the legal system and the consequences of taking action.

thoughtful, timely and fascinating
Revisado: 06-05-19
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I kept pausing to think about how thoughtful and careful "Doing Justice" was in its themes and conclusions. I was even inspired to buy a hard copy to give as a gift to my father who was a District Attorney for many years. My father said he felt the should be required reading for any young prosecutor.
The reading by Preet Bharara was just perfect - his consideration, humor and warmth are all fully in evidence. I've enjoyed his podcast for a while and admire his interviewing style very much (a great skill probably from his work as a lawyer for narrative and getting the best information and cooperation from people he works with). While staying true to his unique and compelling voice and values, this book gives you a greater sense of his own story, drives and vision.
If you are interested in human nature, in justice and in great story telling this may be just the book for you.

Historia
Bruno is a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life - living in his restored shepherd's cottage; patronizing the weekly market; sparring with, and basically ignoring, the European Union bureaucrats from Brussels. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes everything and galvanizes Bruno's attention.

anti-Muslim themes
Revisado: 07-02-18
Please be aware that the story has a lot of anti-Muslim bias (a Muslim man is killed in a small French village). It is not, in my opinion, reckoned with as carefully as it might be, in descriptions and ending, especially now, when countries face increasing xenophobia and intolerance.

Historia
A magical serial killer is on the loose, and gelatinous, otherworldly creatures are infesting the English countryside. Which is making life for the Ministry of Occultism difficult, because magic is supposed to be their best kept secret. After centuries in the shadows, the Ministry is forced to unmask, exposing the country's magical history - and magical citizens - to a brave new world of social media, government scrutiny, and public relations.

limited by stereotypes
Revisado: 06-03-18
the characters were silly, stereotyped and without nuance- a kind of overarching mean-spirited two dimensionality.
I looked up the author to understand if it was a much older person with the hatred and misunderstanding of "young people" you sometimes see but in fact, it was a relatively young writer. While the author has been compared to Pratchett or Adams this work is without their love for humanity, gentle absurdity and sense of wonder.

loved this book
Revisado: 08-30-17
What made the experience of listening to The Age of Treachery the most enjoyable?
I wonder if the author as narrator means that we hear the characters just as intended. The book was wonderful - I've listened over and over.
I am looking forward to the next in series

Sorry I bought it
Revisado: 02-16-14
What would have made Using the Law of Attraction to Grow Great Relationships better?
Editing and a different reader?
Would you ever listen to anything by Christine Sherborne again?
No, this book was astoundingly cliched and simplistic. I'm sorry I spent the money on it.
The text early on spoke of autistic/Aspergers spectrum people in a negative manner. The advice was basic but so trite that I would not recommend it for any adult especially one who had neurologically based difficulties decoding the behaviour and expressions of others. I confess I never got to the "Law of Attraction" part because I stopped listening after 15 minutes.
How could the performance have been better?
The performer had a monotone voice and strangely emphasized certain expressions and words (violent).
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
disappointment, frustration
Any additional comments?

Historia
The Beauty-Impoverished aristocrat Isabella Vernaducci would defy death itself to rescue her imprisoned brother. Though fear formed a fist around her heart, she'd even brave the haunted, accursed lair of the lion - the menacing palazzo of legendary, lethal Don Nicolai DeMarco. The Beast-Rumor said the powerful don could command the heavens, that the beast below did his bidding. . . and that he was doomed to destroy the woman he took as his wife.

terrible accents, couldn't finish
Revisado: 02-15-10
This is the first audiobook I've never finished. I just couldn't bear the narrator's voice and her terrible attempts to render the Italian accent. I couldn't even get through the over-long story to find out the "mystery" at the end.
The narrator switches awkwardly between what must be her normal American accent and one of the worst European (meant possibly to be Italian) accents I've ever heard. Smatterings of Italian in the text meant to make things seem more exotic only emphasize her inability with the language.
The story, what I could gather of it, was both dull, nonsensical (even for a myth story) and inconsistent. I'm sorry I wasted a credit on this and have deleted it from my computer
