Nice LitRPG
Revisado: 04-08-24
I don't like chihuahuas in general. Thanks to the author and to the performer of this book for making me really hate them more, but in a good way. I can't imagine a speaking chihuahua to be written or performed better than these two gentlemen did it.
The rest of the book was fun, too. Nice to see LitRPF being a survival-type game rather than just standard fantasy RPG.
Looking forward to book 2!

Look, I’m a bartender. I have nothing to do with the xenos. I don’t care if it’s an elf or a vampire - as long as they don’t bother me, I steer clear. I have my reasons - you can see them in the scars on my neck. I never wanted to get involved. But my life changed for the second time when I saved the life of a unicorn. I made an enemy of something old - old and evil, and whatever it was, it’ll be back for another try.

Pacing was too fast. Otherwise, great!
Revisado: 11-05-19
My only real gripe with this story was that it was trying to contain about 5 hours in a 2.5 hour work. There's a lot of detail about this iteration of the world I feel like wasn't explored or explained because it was trying to be too self-contained. Alexander seemed to want to keep the story small, but it wanted to be larger. As a result, I never managed to catch my breath and fully immerse myself in it. It was a great premise, and the story was well-done, but I wanted it to be a little more deep, a little slower and more drawn-out.
I really loved the history and premise though. Of that, I cannot say enough. But each big plot point happened too quickly for me to enjoy it as much as I wished to. Will I read this author again? Absolutely!

Humans and elves, dwarves and gnomes, wizards and warriors all live and do business in the thriving, overcrowded port city of Cliff's End, to say nothing of the tourists and travelers who arrive by land and sea, passing through the metropolis on matters of business or pleasure - or on quests. The hard-working, under-appreciated officers of the Cliff's End Castle Guard work day and night to maintain law and order as best they can. Gan Brightblade is one of the world's greatest heroes and a personal friend of the Lord and Lady of Cliff's End.

Not my usual kind of read, and I loved it!
Revisado: 06-05-19
Police procedurals are not a genre I normally reach for, but attending a convention with the author as a panelist had me eager to read Dragon Precinct.
I do not regret it in the least! DeCandido has created an amazing culture in a fantasy city that has the same sorts of problems we do in the real world. He actually made me care about the cops of such a place. How they approach crimesolving in a world where magic exists, where different fantasy races coexist... it's vibrant and a joy to read!
You can bet I'll be picking up the rest of the series.

Ready for more!
Revisado: 02-11-19
I really enjoyed the concept behind this book. Dan, our main character, faces not only the reality of the magical in his own backyard, but the reality of being a kid In the present-day United States. He has school, homework, and chores to deal with that get in the way of his exploring the magic around him.
I've given 4 stars because the first half or so of the book seemed... a bit more chaotic than I expected. Not that things weren't explained, but it felt like every moment, something new that seemed unrelated cropped up. It was a bombardment of things that didn't really give time to breathe. Everything did wrap up very well in the end, but I was kept far too off-balance to ignore it.
Unrelated to my overall rating, I wasn't a huge fan of the narrator. While his characters were pretty good, the narration felt... the only way I can describe it is "fake." Like he didn't want to be reading it and was falsely putting urgency and emotion behind what was going on. That is purely personal opinion, though.

I LOVE this world!
Revisado: 01-14-19
Magic-fueled technology in a science-fiction scavenger setting? What's not to like?!
I loved this story, the plot, the setting, and most importantly, the cast. White has such a strong sense of character that even if characters had similar names, there was no confusing them because they were so different.
But its the setting that really gets me. I cannot get over how amazing the merging of magic and technology are! I will be digging even further into this series very soon!

Fun, but it ended abruptly
Revisado: 12-20-18
I loved the reality of this book. Kind of an odd statement, considering it's clearly about a wererabbit. When I say reality, I mean the things our main character, Snow, deals with. Yes, she's a wererabbit, but she has to cope with the same kinds of things normal children do. Self-identity, interests, social failures and successes. And being a rabbit, of course.
Okay, maybe that last one isn't normal to deal with, but still.
My only real criticism of this book is that what felt like the real main conflict didn't start until over halfway through the book. Don't get me wrong, I loved the atmosphere and tone of events leading up to it, but when things really started to get really troublesome...the book ended.
I'm glad to know there are more books intended for this series. The sudden ending left me with a sort of brand new plot thread that has only been cast on and not woven in. It's a dangling line that's much looser than I'm accustomed to in books.
Overall, this is a solid and enjoyable read, and I look forward to more!

A little draggy in the last third, but still great
Revisado: 12-29-17
This book was well in keeping with the Empire of Bones series, remaining true to the tension of the world and the current situation. While the conflicts were solid, I feel like the last third of the book or so sort of dragged. I am, as always, eager to continue with the series when book 8 comes out, but the last bit was kind of a slog. To be fair, it wasn't quite as much of a drag as the second half of book 3, but this one was a little weaker than the others of the series.
Still, Mixon has my attention quite strongly in his grasp. I'm ready for the next installment.

One of the weaker in the series, but still good
Revisado: 12-21-17
There is some exciting stuff happening in this book, but that said, it's one of the weaker ones in the series. The ups were decent rather than excellent, and even the lowest points weren't that jarring. It was a middle-of-the-road book. It just didn't seem to reach the emotional highs and lows of Paying the Price or Empire of Bones.
It did, though, introduce yet another character that I'm ready to see get fully slapped in the face. After Wallace Breckenridge and Ethan Bandar, we needed someone else to detest completely.
In this book, we get it. And it's carrying over into book 7!

Revisado: 12-14-17
By far my favorite Empire of Bones novel so far! This book paid off some of the things I've been looking forward to from book 1, and it delivered in a big way. I was pleased to see some of the secondary and tertiary characters we've seen come closer to the forefront in this book, and just... wow. The ending was awesome!
I am pumped for book 6!

Revisado: 12-05-17
Mixon really nailed this one. Some of what happened in book 3 left me feeling stagnant, but I am so in love with the characters and setting that I could not turn down reading book 4. This was a refreshing new situation for our characters, with some new people to interact with, and just a whole plethora of possibilities. I was on the edge of my seat the whole book, and I am pumped for book 5!
