Somewhat funny, but mostly annoying
Revisado: 07-13-23
There were some cute embarrassing stories, but the way the authors consistently interrupt each other in an attempt to spice up the stories, is really annoying and at times cringe-inducing.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

I didn't know who Jennette was before this book.
Revisado: 09-18-22
I enjoy nonfiction, especially biographies, and the title intrigued me as I recently lost my own mother. I wanted to learn why someone could feel happy that her mother was dead. I completely understand now, and I'm thankful for Jennette's sake that she died as well. Wow. A very insightful look not only into the life of a child actress but also a peek inside the secret lives of children innocently living, and coping with a mentally ill parent.

Historia
Love, Lucy is the valentine Lucille Ball left for her fans—a warm, wise, and witty memoir written by Lucy herself. The legendary star of the classic sitcom I Love Lucy was at the pinnacle of her success when she sat down to record the story of her life. No comedienne had made America laugh so hard, no television actress had made the leap from radio and B movies to become one of the world’s best-loved performers. This is her story—in her own words.

Played it at 0.8 speed
Revisado: 09-14-21
I really like this story. Some reviewers mentioned that the narrator read a little fast, so I played it at 0.8 speed and it seemed perfect for me. I loved how the narrator captures Desi's accent perfectly.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

I'm not big on fiction, but this story is so beautifully written and full of minute details that it comes alive instantly and feels like a magical memoir.

Historia
>When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

I almost quit listening because I didn't care for the first chapter about poaching, but that soon gave way to the most interesting story, read to me in the most beautiful accents. I didn't want this book to end, it was mesmerizing, funny, heartbreaking at times and just a joy to listen to.

As a child in Toronto, Molly Burke was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa and became completely sightless as a teenager. Good book, awful performance
Revisado: 03-25-20
I've been following Molly on YouTube and Twitter for years, and was excited to listen to her first book. However her reading was simply awful. Perhaps I'm too old (45) to appreciate the vocal intonations of the millenial generation, but in my opinion listening to this book was similar to being forced to listen to one side of a phone conversation some super chatty high school girl is having on public transportation seemingly oblivious to the people around her. It could be the most interesting thing you've ever heard at times, but the manner in which its told sort of spoils the whole thing.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

Chock full of propaganda
Revisado: 02-20-20
The left-wing propaganda was obvious to me within 6 minutes of listening to this book. This book is either purposely lying, or just very ignorant. Either way, "The Minuteman" claims the Jewish-Americans who fought the American Nazi's were "anti-fascists" and that they are the predecessors to Antifa. However, everyone knows (or should know) that the Nazis in Hitler's day were themselves called "anti-fascists". Do an online search for the Nazi "Antifascista flag" and see how perfectly it matches the Antifa flag of today.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

This is a well-told story about a group of Americans I knew very little about. I truly enjoyed it and pray we as a country can do something to improve the lives of more people like J.D. (the author).
