There are many good books about the modern space era, this isn’t one of them. I suggest checking out Eric Berger as an alternative. Surprisingly I didn’t mind the AI narration, looks like another job could disappear.

This book is so bad that I believe positive reviews are fraudulent. As a military history buff I warn you away from this travesty of a book.

Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.

This book is the best SciFi book I have ever read. It reminds me slightly of The Glass Bead Game by Hesse, both books written about a cloistered group of intellectuals. The plot is inventive and Stephenson throws ideas at you like Ninja star knives.
It has a slow start going through the history of the planet, hang in there, it gets better, amazingly better.

Historia
In celebration of the week-long, once-in-a-decade rite of Apert, the fras and suurs prepare to venture outside the concent's gates - opening them wide at the same time to welcome the curious "extras" in. During his first Apert as a fra, Erasmus eagerly anticipates reconnecting with the landmarks and family he hasn't seen since he was "collected". But before the week is out, both the existence he abandoned and the one he embraced will stand poised on the perilous brink of cataclysmic change.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Over rated dross
Revisado: 04-18-14
It does compare to Heinlein - in that the dialogue between the sexes is hideous, I'm left wondering, does anyone speak that way? We have a hero who overcomes impossible obstacles and achieves greatness. It's like the A Team goes to space, our hero is effectively untouchable. A minor foray into morality is not explored which is a disappointment.
Humans are like the cockroaches of the galaxy and deserve to be eaten/eliminated or whatever. This is a light weight romp that requires the reader to turn of their brain as humans trash the place to make the galaxy safe for their blighted species.
For all the misguided people who think this is good Sci-Fi, do yourself a favour and read Amour by John Reynolds, now that is a book Heinlein should be compared to. This is rubbish by comparison.

Historia
Spearpoint, the last human city, is an atmosphere-piercing spire of vast size. Clinging to its skin are the zones, a series of semi-autonomous city-states, each of which enjoys a different---and rigidly enforced---level of technology. Following an infiltration mission that went tragically wrong, Quillon has been living incognito, working as a pathologist in the district morgue.

Contemporary Sci Fi at its best
Revisado: 01-26-14
John Lee is a great narrator and does justice to an excellent book. Terminal World is amazingly inventive, the characters believable and I found it hard to stop listening.
For the people who don't like the ending I have only this to say.... WTF!
The logic of the book is impeccable although it does finish without explaining every possible permutation. The author is relying on you to use some of your own imagination, after all he has just delivered a masterpiece to you on a plate - surely that's not too much to ask.
Brain eating machines, dirigibles, his version of Reavers, mysteries everywhere are found on this dying planet and yet Reynolds holds it all together. If you get this book and don't like it please disregard all of my reviews, we're obviously not compatible.

Acclaimed author Michael J. Sullivan created instant best sellers with his spellbinding Riyria Revelations series. This first volume introduces Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater, two enterprising thieves who end up running for their lives when they’re framed for the death of the king. Trapped in a conspiracy bigger than they can imagine, their only hope is unraveling an ancient mystery - before it’s too late.

Needs a massive rewrite with a decent editor
Revisado: 04-03-13
This is fairly pedestrian stuff, lots of unbelievable coincidences and a lack of logic to key aspects of the plot. I know it's a fantasy novel, but I expect the world to be believable within the fantasy parameters set out by the author.
Nevertheless I must admit to enjoying parts of it, (a dirty, guilty pleasure, because the book is rubbish) so it's not a total disaster. What eventually killed it for me was the wholesale lifting of the Catholic Church tradition and the dumping of it in this fantasy world. It just killed immersion for me - I couldn't bear it anymore and I had to stop listening.
For all those who love this book - what is wrong with you? If this is what passes for great fantasy, the genre is doomed. I bought this on the basis of the ratings - audible reviewers, please lift your game.
