Historia
A man must survive the zombie apocalypse armed with only a shotgun, a Samurai bat, and the will to live among the unliving in this horror series debut. It’s been two years since civilization ended in an unstoppable wave of chaos and blood. Now, former house painter Augustus “Gus” Berry lives a day-to-day existence of waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the inevitable moment when “they” will come up the side of his mountain and penetrate his fortress.

A rollicking good time for zombie lovers!
Revisado: 02-14-25
Having listened to several zombie series in recent times, this was easily the best! Very absorbing and vivid, Keith told a great tale. Some effective set pieces and a rip-roaring ending, I can’t wait to start in on the second in the series. Captain Morgan would approve!!

Solid zombie apocalypse tale
Revisado: 12-22-24
If you’ve already read the first in the series, you’ll know what’s on the cards - a fast-moving zombie story with exploding undead heads and ripped-out guts galore. Tremendous fun!!

Historia
The planet of Kiln is where the tyrannical Mandate keeps its prison colony, and for inmates, the journey there is always a one-way trip. One such prisoner is Professor Arton Daghdev, xeno-ecologist and political dissident. Soon after arrival, he discovers that Kiln has a secret. Humanity is not the first intelligent life to set foot there. In the midst of a ravenous, chaotic ecosystem are the ruins of a civilization, but who were the vanished builders and where did they go?

Could have been a short story
Revisado: 12-05-24
This novel garnered many great reviews so I thought I’d give it a go. The tale started off very promisingly, full of intrigue and decent world-building. Then about a third of the way in it just seemed to plateau and do nothing for a huge chunk of chapters - rather like someone left a big wet lump of alien clay spinning on the potter’s wheel while they popped out to fetch a ham sandwich for their luncheon, but while they were away they bumped into an old friend and decided to go to the pub, eventually staggering home in the wee small hours, by which time the lump of alien clay had dried out and gone all hard. Boo.
I could have overlooked the multitude of tedious/needless chapters if the ending had been a real barnstormer but I’m sad to say it was rather underwhelming - especially when you consider how long it took it to arrive and crash in heavy-handedly.
All in all, this was a disappointingly long-winded experience for me. However, on the bright side, the narration did send me drifting off to sleep on more than a fair few occasions. So if you are looking for a natural cure for your insomnia, Alien Clay could be it!

Historia
In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

Tiresome
Revisado: 06-28-24
First up, the dummy table read style that is peppered throughout the audiobook really did not work for me - the flubbed lines schtick quickly started to grate and by the middle of the book I felt like yelling “just get on with it!!” at my phone. Totally annoying, distracting and tore me clean out the story every time it happened (which was a fair bit unfortunately.)
Speaking of the story (without giving too much away) - it was an interesting premise but veered into lazy cliche at several points. The split between then and now made things feel clunky and overwrought, causing the narrative to trip over its own feet and lose momentum, just when it would start hitting a bit of a stride.
Having read all the stellar reviews, I was expecting this to be a killer listen. But instead I was left feeling dead bored!! 💀

Historia
The long-awaited new novel from Margaret Atwood. The Year of the Flood is a dystopic masterpiece and a testament to her visionary power. The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God's Gardeners - a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life - has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life.

Very good…apart from the songs!!
Revisado: 11-21-23
A good follow-up to Oryx and Crake that takes a while to heat up, but when it finally does, woah Nelly hold onto your hats lads!! Had to dock a star for the songs tho, as they were real stinkers!!

Historia
The metropolis of New Crobuzon sprawls at the center of the world. Humans and mutants and arcane races brood in the gloom beneath its chimneys, where the river is sluggish with unnatural effluent and foundries pound into the night. For a thousand years, the Parliament and its brutal militias have ruled over a vast economy of workers and artists, spies and soldiers, magicians, crooks, and junkies. Now a stranger has arrived, with a pocketful of gold and an impossible demand. And something unthinkable is released.

An ideal cure for insomnia
Revisado: 11-18-22
Started off so promising, but quickly descended into tired fantasy tropes and reams of needless (and rather boring) descriptive details. Was a real slog to finish….and the ending turned out to be something of a total bummer!! The narration was the only saving grace.
