Absolutely brilliant! A laugh-out-loud treasure.
Revisado: 06-11-21
Gerald Durrell was a gifted writer, and it turns out he was a gifted reader as well. As he narrated his alternately gorgeous and hilarious prose in his extremely posh accent, I fell about laughing at the genius dialogue, the depiction of witty and irascible elder brother Larry (author Lawrence Durrell as a very young man), long-suffering Mother, querulous sister Margo, pugnacious brother Leslie, and the eccentric friends who were familiar to me from reading the books many times since childhood. This recording is a treasure, and I only wish Gerald Durrell had recorded all of his books about his childhood in Corfu in the 1930s, his batty British family, and the colorfully inimitable characters, fascinating animals and dreamlike landscapes of a paradisical Greek island.

Historia
In the year 1740, Commodore (later Admiral) George Anson embarked on a voyage that would become one of the most famous exploits in British naval history. Sailing through poorly charted waters, Anson and his men encountered disaster, disease, and astonishing success. They circumnavigated the globe and seized a nearly incalculable sum of Spanish gold and silver, but only one of the five ships survived.

Absolutely brilliant. O’Brian is a genius.
Revisado: 02-27-21
The narrator entertainingly portrays all the different characters and their accents, bringing O’Brian’s captivating tale to life with all the author’s trademark dry wit, wealth of seafaring detail and trenchant observations of human nature. The only thing better is reading the book yourself, but that’s hard to do when you’re driving. A joy either way.
